Argentina's Menem Loses Governor's Race (Bush buddy)
Source: Associated Press/Houston Chronicle

BUENOS AIRES, Argentina - Former President Carlos Menem was easily defeated by an incumbent governor of a western province on Sunday, ending a comeback bid by the 77-year-old who governed the country from 1989 to 1999.

With 88 percent of the vote counted late Sunday in La Rioja province, Gov. Luis Beder Herrera had 41 percent of the ballots.

Menem, a conservative, free-market supporter who had used two terms as La Rioja governor as a springboard to the presidency and the helm of the Peronist party, placed a distant third with 22 percent.
(snip)

Kirchner and others have blamed Menem's close alliance with the United States and adherence to Washington's policies for the 2002 economic crisis.

Carlos Menem, who pardoned Argentina's Dirty War
officials, charged with horrendous atrocities,
only to have them "unpardoned" during the last
few years, under President Kirchner, thank god.

Shown with his current wife, Chile's Cecilla Bolocco,
former Miss Universe, and shown with #41 Bush, with
whose entire family he has been closely associated.

5. Oh, jeez. Just saw his Wikipedia, learned he arranged his own re-election,
(and here we see he has had designs on sneaking up on the Presidency ALL OVER AGAIN) and the American corporate media apparently OVERLOOKED the opportunity to raise holy hell, to claim the sky is falling, as they did for Hugo Chavez, but not Alvaro Uribe, of course.

Why is it the right-wing, neo-liberals get a free pass, anyway? Hmmmm?

You will find this Wikipedia review of his magnificent political career INSPIRING! Wow!
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carlos_Menem

Was once wanted for embezzlement, corruption, etc. Bush family friend. Guess all that trouble just went away when the right people got back into power.

Do you want to see what happened when he privatized Argentina's water? Not for the squeamish!

7. People wanting to see Menem's Argentina up close should check out "The Take"...
Edited on Mon Aug-20-07 06:39 PM by calipendence
which is Avi Lewis's and Naomi Klein's documentary on how workers were dealing with the corruption that was closing factories down there and completely raping their middle class, and how they pushed out Menem from the presidency then. A really good (and inspirational as well) film!

It's good to see that Argentinians are staying wise and keeping him out of any position of power!

8. Amazing! Would never have known about this film had I not seen your post, no doubt.
If Naomi Klein's involved, it's going to be well researched, and excellent.

Can't wait to see this A.S.A.P. Thank you for the information.

9. Peronism is every ideology in Argentina.
There are Marxist Peronists, fascist Peronists, and neo-liberal Peronists. What exactly is Peronism, other than a vague tribute to the man himself? Peron was definitely not a progressive in most respects, but most progressives in Argentina probably pay at least passing tribute to him. Just a rant...

Oh, and good that Menem was politically crushed.

11. George W. Bush, Carlos Menem & Enron all go back to 1988 together.
First, thanks to Judi Lynn for this newstory today.

Further, anyone wanting to learn about the earlier days of George W. Bush, back during his cocaine days when he was free-wheeling and dealing in, you guessed it, Argentina, here's a little story from the great Mother Jones: http://www.motherjones.com/news/feature/2000/03/argentina.html
