EU offers Libya membership of trading block

The European Commission has invited Libya to join the trading block between the EU and countries around the Mediterranean Sea. The commission President Romano Prodi said it was time Libya 'joined the circle of EU friends'. The Euro-Mediterranean Partnership gives twelve countries in North Africa and the Middle East favourable trading conditions with the EU.

Brussels and Tripoli have moved closer together now that Libya has agreed to abandon its nuclear weapons programme and to pay damages to the families of victims of the Lockerbie disaster.

But the change in Libya (which started many years a go) has happened mostly because of promise of Euro-Mediterranean partnership and FTA. EU has one weapon, the mighty carrot, and it uses it very effectively to create stability at it's borders.

and vice versa! US is only in it for a share of oil profits! ELF and AGIP will proably make out like bandits!
