Germans say Bin Laden recordings are authentic: report

German police experts believe the various videos and tapes attributed to Al Qaeda chief Osama bin Laden since the September 11, 2001 attacks in the United States are authentic, according to a report quoted by the weekly Focus which goes on sale on Monday.

It said experts had ruled out the possibility that the tapes had been put together from archive material or otherwise manipulated.

According to Focus, the analyses established that Bin Laden uses modern recording equipment, including a computer.

The experts also put forward the hypothesis that the terrorist network has its own recording studio in which it handles its raw material.

The German specialists even analysed a bird-song that could be heard in the background on one of the tapes, and identified it as coming from a bird which only lived in certain regions.

4. Not even one?

This report is dubious. I'm very suspicious about reports concerning 911 and bin Laden coming from Germany. Their actions and reports seem designed to bring out the worst in America. Officially they oppose bushista excesses, but their actions feed the fires of the his reactionary politics.

8. I read the report today - several misleading statements here ...

First, only the video statements aired on Al Jazeera were analyzed -- which would exclude the best known, infamous and probably faked tape found in Afghanistan.

Second, the Focus article nowhere mentions if the Bundeskriminalamt (BKA - German Federal Police), who carried out the analysis, have any authentic recordings of bin Laden's voice (other than these alleged pronouncements), which would reduce the result of the analysis to the following: The BKA found that all alleged bin Laden pronouncements aired on Al Jazeera are from one and the same person (whoever that is and whenever they were produced).

Finally, the German specialists indeed analysed secondary clues such as a bird-song that could be heard in the background on one of the tapes. However, Focus explicitly states that it is very QUESTIONABLE if this MIGHT lead anywhere, since NOBODY KNOWS if these birds live only in certain regions or not, and if the bird is in a cage or outdoors.

10. Why listen to the Germans now?

Germany - On September 14, the German newspaper Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung (FAZ) reported that "U.S. and Israeli intelligence agencies received warning signals at least three months ago that Middle eastern terrorists were planning to hijack commercial aircraft to use as weapons to attack important symbols of American and Israeli culture."

According to a report filed by the Post-Newsweek information service, "The FAZ, quoting unnamed German Intelligence sources, said that the Echelon spy network was being used to collect information about the terrorist threats, and that U.K. intelligence services apparently also had advance warning. The FAZ, one of Germany's most respected dailies, said that even as far back as six months ago, western and near-east press services were receiving information that such attacks were being planned. "Within the American intelligence community, the warnings were taken seriously and surveillance intensified"
