Drill Instructor Arraigned For Abusing Recruits
Source: 10news.com

A San Diego drill instructor accused of abusing recruits could face a sentence of nearly 270 years in prison if he's convicted on all charges leveled against him, it was reported Thursday.

Sgt. Jerrod M. Glass postponed entering a plea Wednesday at San Diego Marine Corps Recruit Depot, where he was arraigned on 244 counts of abusing recruits. He also delayed his request to have a trial by judge or jury, The San Diego Union-Tribune reported.

Glass is accused of striking almost every member of his 60-man platoon -- some repeatedly -- during a monthlong rampage between mid-January and mid-February of this year, the Union-Tribune reported.

The charges include 91 specifications of assault, 89 of failure to obey orders and 47 of cruelty and maltreatment, the newspaper reported.

1. I wonder what this guy REALLY did or who he pissed off
Edited on Thu Aug-23-07 04:23 PM by youngdem
It is VERY rare for a Drill Sergent to be tried for cruelty, and it sure the fuck ain't for lack of trying on many of their parts. My buddies who did basic were abused horridly by theirs.

20. The "folks" at Haditha are Murdering War Criminals
The military white washed their sentences because the military needs more craven killers of Islamic and Brown people.

The military is saying in effect---Go Kill those Towel heads-- rape them too and NOTHING will happen to you

Disgusting Thuggery

3. WOW--he either slipped under the radar in the vetting process, or he's the tip of the iceberg
He HAD to start out as the #2, working under a more experienced drill instructor, for at least a cycle or two. Where could he have learned that shit, I wonder? Or was he truly a one-off? Or, a three or four or six off????

Some of the alleged abuses resemble fraternity pranks, such as forcing a recruit to jump into a trash can, while others suggest stern physical punishment, the Union-Tribune reported.

Glass had worked as a drill sergeant for less than a year when the alleged mistreatment took place. No member of his platoon was seriously injured, but at least four ran away from duty, the newspaper reported.

Four officers who oversaw Glass at the time have been relieved of duty. In addition, at least two other drill instructors have been charged and are expected to be arraigned next month. If convicted, they could face a maximum sentence of one year in the brig, according to the Union-Tribune.

Glass' court-martial is tentatively set for Nov. 8 to Nov. 21, the newspaper reported.

Your post reminded me of the movie A Few Good Men. Curiously, I thought it was fiction.

4. I dunno how I feel about this..
it's perplexing...As a vet, I understand that this Sgt. was prob'ly trying to get these recruits ready, for the almost certain, horrors of war they'll face.. get them broken down so they could build 'em up again the MARINE way...but if the military says it's illegal, this cat's gonna spend alot of time polishing brass in the brig.

Then again, he might just be another asshole on a power-trip, in which case he needs to get used the the scent of "never dull".

6. Not a smart DI for sure.
Any DI worth a crap will just let you work yourself over, or make you the reason for the whole platoon getting worked over, then let them pay you a visit at night with a blanket party.

After Paris Island, I definately prefer Brass-O.

13. Oh, both.
Armand made a big move back in the 70's and a lot of peeps started using them.

I have polished at least one of everything, including gongs. I am still cleaning the silver oxide out from under my fingernails.

total percussionist from the 70's here, and not a real good one at that.

I somewhat remember the bid deal when they split up.

9. Up until about 20 years ago, wasn't it standard procedure for DI's to strike recruits?

10. WHen I enlisted back in '77
the DS were in the learning phase on not being able to "lay hands" upon soldiers. They could and did rant and rave until we got it right, but no battery or anything that I would have gotten upset over. They did grab and move you into proper positions and of course if you were to slow to resopnd correctly you did PT until the DS turned blue...

15. Drill Sergarnt, Army.
I entered Paris Island Marine Corps Recruit Depot on September 25th 1980, and the laying on of hands was forbidden. (to be caught doing anyways)

A very large Sgt by the name of Buchanan, heard the man next to me talking one day and with a swift uppercut to my solar plexus, picked me up and pined me to the wall with my feet dangling short of the floor. He thought it was me talking, close enough I guess, everyone got the message.

The Marines is no place for those who can't take a shot and this was just my experience with hands on training, he actually liked me in comparison to some of the more unfortunate.

It sounds harsh, it is harsh.

100 men living together for four months under grueling conditions of heat, cold, and physical exhaustion will at times lead to a clash of wills.

If it were you in a combat situation, would you rather be with those who have proven they will get back up and keep covering your ass after a hit, or those who have not?

17. Boot camp
When I was in navy boot camp in 1969, the company chiefs routingly roughed up guys. Mostly by bouncing them of lockers or bunks. Never saw any of them punch a guy though.

This was all SOP...and much worse was done besides...

The military is an insane proposition.

Take "normal" (mostly) adolescent children, destroy their personalities and "rebuild" them into automatons capable of cold blooded murder.

Fucking insane...
