Nick Clooney Running for Ky. Congress (George Clooney's Dad)
BEDFORD, Ky. (AP) - Political newcomer Nick Clooney needed no introduction as he shook hands with people hunched over steaming breakfast plates at the Farmhouse restaurant.

"I knew him since I walked in the door, and I had never met him before," said Richard Ginn, a real estate appraiser and tobacco farmer.

The 69-year-old congressional candidate has instant recognition in northern Kentucky from his days as a Cincinnati television news anchor.

It doesn't hurt that he's also the father of actor George Clooney, the brother of the late singer-actress Rosemary Clooney, a columnist for The Cincinnati Post for 15 years and a former host on the cable network American Movie Classics.

2. It's a swing seat
Clooney can win, but the Repubs can win as well. It's a must-win for retaking the House in 2004.

4. What good news.
Nick Clooney is a good soul. I heard him one Christmas Eve when he was a news anchor on one of the Cincinnati stations some years back.

At the end of the broadcast, he asked his viewers to consider the men and women who worked in the studio that night to bring them a newscast while most people were home with their friends and families.

It was an elegant and moving and classy performance. Most local newscasts don't have a tenth the class that his did that night.

As well, he's really smart and highly qualified for public service. I hope he wins and wins big.
