Former Senator Cleland Disputes Bush's Vietnam Analogy on Iraq
Source: Bloomberg

Former Democratic U.S. Senator Max Cleland, a disabled Vietnam veteran, said President George W. Bush made a faulty analogy when he cited that war to bolster his case for continuing U.S. military operations in Iraq.

``One of the lessons to be learned from Vietnam is that the commitment of American military strength alone cannot solve another country's political weakness,'' Cleland said today in the Democratic Party's weekly radio address. ``This should be a somber warning to us all to responsibly end the war in Iraq and the additional loss of precious American lives.''

(snip)
Cleland, who was defeated for the Senate in 2002 by Republican Saxby Chambliss, said Bush has a ``credibility gap'' just as political leaders during the Vietnam era did, and is ``trying to sell the American people a bill of goods on the Iraq war.''

``I've seen this movie before. I know how it ends,'' Cleland, who lost both legs and his right arm in a grenade explosion in 1968, said. ``I know all the PR in the world didn't change the truth on the ground in Vietnam and won't change the truth on the ground today in Iraq.''

11. How do you suggest Georgians vote Shameless out when Diebold machines

are used statewide. Read the posts above and learn.

13. Doesn't mean that Georgians can just give in to those bastard machines.
I know all about Diebold and the past election as I have relatives down in Georgia.

Thanks but I don't need to look at the posts to learn. :eyes:

14. So you knew about Diebold but you assert that Georgians

"must redeem themselves" and vote Shameless out? How?

I want to go back to paper ballots, hand-counted, everywhere in the US, with sensible rules. If a voter both marks an X next to a candidate's name and circles his name, the vote is valid. The voter's intent is obvious and the government should stop with the nitpicking that means discarding the votes of people who don't read very well, having not been taught properly in the public schools, and of elderly people who may not be able to see well enough to read the instructions (and were refused help by poll workers in some polls in Palm Beach County, Florida, in 2000.)

But how do I get Georgia to throw out the Diebold machines? The woman in charge of elections in the Peach State thinks Diebolds are peachy keen.

8. It is amazing that George Bush would give a speech comparing Iraq to Vietnam....
and believe that comparison would build support for the war. Remember this is the same administration that used to vehemently reject the suggestion that Iraq was like Vietnam, now all of a sudden they want everyone to learn the lessons of Vietnam. Of course the lesson they want us to learn is completely divorced from reality, but they somehow think people will buy their bullshit.

9. I wonder, though, if anybody really believes him anymore.
Has any wingnut come out writing in support of what * was saying? I know that the networks reported on it by coupling it with a historian or comment from somebody calling it BS.

In my own life, my rightie Dad has had it with *--and he's usually in lock step with all of them.
