New Data Erases Doubt on Storms and Warming

BROOKLIN, Canada, Sep 11 (IPS) - There is little doubt now that climate change is making hurricanes and cyclones much more powerful and more frequent, top scientists announced Monday.

Sea surface temperatures are rising due to global warming and more than a dozen studies since Hurricane Katrina hit the United States last August show this has resulted in the dramatic increase in the strength of hurricanes in recent years.

"There is no doubt at all that hurricane intensity has increased," said Kerry Emanuel, a climatologist at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

These are the latest computer models and researchers have a high level of confidence in their results, says Wigley. "There is less than a one percent chance that the changes in Sea Surface Temperatures could be the result of non-human factors," he said.

The real shit is about to hit the fan.

When it does, I hope the most deceitful of the global warming deniers will be put on trial. What they've done to delay action is nothing less than criminal negligence causing death.

1. There will always be deniers. Forget trying to change their minds and focus
on what we can do to save our planet.

2. The whole argument by those in "climate-change denial" that "we didn't do it" or "it's natural" is
nothing but a distraction.

The fact is, climate change is real, and it doesn't matter one iota what the cause is, we have to do everything we can to stop it. And that includes reduction of greenhouse gases by any means possible.

4. I agree...the "distraction" keeps us from acting to stave off what effects we can
Doesn't really matter why the earth is warming...she is and we need to do everything we can to mitigate what humans have done.

10. Obviously it matters why. If we allow the deniers to continue to confuse people about that....
..then people won't see the need to act.

Why reduce GhG if you believe the sun is causing global warming?

3. Tornadoes..... they seem to be more vicious and numerous than in
days gone by. This is all so not good. Meanwhile Amurka ticks on killing people in faraway lands so she will be "safe". I call bullshit, the real threat is from our own Congress lying on its laurels and climate change.

11. No he won't. He'll play the game of being concerned and calling for action....
...all while he pretty much does sweet fuck all.

#1 he doesn't think it's a problem, and #2 thinks that even if it is a problem...technology will solve it.

7. Jesus himself could come down and tell each and every denier it is happening
and some STILL wouldn't 'believe' it because it would change their lives in some way. Many Americans are simply ostriches with arms instead of wings.

8. I always thought the idea of climate change leading to worse
storms and more extremes of weather, and more frequent/bigger hurricanes, was pretty much common sense. After all, they tell us that the ocean storms get their energy from sea temperature........

12. I would suggest for everybody,
to keep life preservers or jackets at home just as you would take out on a boat, even if you're not currently listed as living in a flood zone because that can change rapidly. Many people still can't swim and you may not have much opportunity to learn during or after a catastrophic flood.

14. Good point. It was listed in IPS as recent, The fact that it's old...and STILL the deniers
want to debate the connection, is amazing.

And welcome to DU.

15. What's really interesting is that nobody noticed it was old until now. The denial machine supresses
this kind of information.

22. What gets me about this story is people continue to build on low-lying
coastal areas. Despite all the evidence, everyone likes that view of the water and many want to be right on the water. Pretty soon, they'll be IN the water.
