French president speaks out in favour of nuclear energy for Libya

PARIS (Thomson Financial) - Libya should be "allowed" access to nuclear energy, French president Nicolas Sarkozy said on Friday. "The greatest risk to the world today is the clash between western and eastern civilisations. When the east no longer has gas and petrol, it must have development. If they are destitute, there will be terrorism," said Sarkozy.

...

Earlier this month Sarkozy denied the existence of a plan to sell a nuclear power plant to Libya, following a report (...)
that Libya had told power plant developer Areva it wanted to buy an European pressurised water reactor.

This statement is funny in many ways. Could it be that Sarkozy was interviewed while relaxing drunk on the yacht of his rich friends who bought him the last election?

Because

- Libya supports terrorism since more then 30 years and so far they still have oil, I guess. So what does running out of oil have to do with this? I'd rather say the less money the Libyan regime has, the better. Because this reduces the amount of money the regime hands over to international terrorists, like it has over the last decades.

- And what exactly does Libya has to do with 'eastern civilizations'? I would have expected a quote like this from Bush. But then again, those two are quite comparable politicians, aren't they?

2. I agree with his statements.
The developing world does indeed need comprehensive development. Nuclear energy, well-regulated, may be a component of countering the energy-based instability in the world.

Libya's civilization would generally be considered an eastern one - certainly the Arab and Bedouin peoples are not considered "western."
