Durbin: Patrick Fitzgerald Could Be Long Shot To Replace Gonzales
Source: NBC5/AP

CHICAGO -- U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin said Monday the top federal prosecutor in Chicago might be a long shot to replace outgoing Attorney General Alberto Gonzales.

The Illinois Democrat praised U.S. Attorney Patrick Fitzgerald for being a career prosecutor who has proven time and again that he looks at the law and not politics. Fitzgerald's Chicago office has prosecuted several high-profile cases, including former Illinois Gov. George Ryan.

Durbin has been a frequent critic of Gonzales. He said he is glad Gonzales is leaving his post next month, but he wonders about the timing of it.

because that would land his ass in jail.

5. Bingo. The prosecution of Scooter ended any chance he had under Bush
And I suspect that the confirmation would split along partisan lines.

...that the "honorable" prosecutor cut a deal with the White House to shield Rove and Cheney from charges.

12. I think Durbin's hallucinating, but here's my long shot : Holy Joe.
Shrub picks Lieberman, the Connecticut Governor replaces him with a Republican and bingo - the Senate count just went to hell for the Democrats.

13. I think Joe Lieberman would actually make a great choice
for idiot of the year. He can leave the Senate, or throw it to the Republicans for all I care. Honestly. At least we wouldn't have to worry about it for two long years. He would show Connecticut that he is a liar and that he is pathetic, and could never run for any office again.

23. I don't think he stands much of a chance next go-round here, anyway
There's a fair amount of "buyer's remorse" that I'm hearing from people who were stupid enough to vote for him last time.

22. The irony might be that a CT Republican might be more open to
Democratic plans than Lieberman is.

I think Rell would be under some SERIOUS pressure not to choose a wingnut. She's sort of out-gunned right now at home.

21. Why? What would be in it for him?
What does Lieberman offer there that's more important than what he offers now?

He's already a wholly-owned subsidiary of the Bush administration, what more could they squeeze from him with this?

15. Bush would nominate Jack Abramoff
or Tom Delay before Fitzgerald. Bush has no shame, huge balls and wants a "fixer" at Justice who will clear the way for all this administration's law-breaking and illegality.

19. Is Durbin HIGH?
Bush would NEVER nominate a real lawyer with real ethics and a real commitment to the Constitution. It's anathema to everything that is the modern republican party.

No, they are gonna nominate someone like Chertoff.

And if they don't get their way, they will just wait for a recess appointment. (next recess)

Does anyone really think Mr. Holdagrudge would appoint Fitzgerald? Mr. Childish Tempertantrums?

I don't have much hope of this, though it would be a nice choice.

26. The Dems should refuse to consider anyone but Fitz
He's a devout Repuke, so there can be no whining about partisanism, his career has been a thundering success, and he's above reproach, ethics-wise.

Time to start acting like a majority

38. Smart enough?
No, he's smart enough to know that would be tantamount to putting his arms out for the cuffs. His and every one of his cronies. Nope, the only reason he might do that is if he wants to go down in the history books as the stupidest President ever. He's very likely got that one clinched anyway so he has no need to pole vault it in the ninth inning, just to mix up my sports metaphors.

29. Its a long shot round the moon....the house of cards would
be blown away if an honest broker became Attorney Gen....He will nominate the revolving usual suspects and hopefully the Congress will hold up their appointments and confirmations...Comey and Fitz are just too honest and all the scandals that have not been acted upon would now be acted on...so it is only a pipe dream not in the cards.

35. Yeah,
like that'll ever happen!

Nope, they'll try to get Chertoff in so we have someone to throw out on their ear and then give us some no name crony who isn't one whit better than the piece of shit who just got flushed down the toilet.

One way to get our mind off Gonzales is to focus it back on Heck of a Job Brownie, which this will because we associate Chertoff with HOAJ Brownie. Different day, same silly script. It would amuse me except it always works for these people. It's infuriating that so much incompetence is able to wreak so much havoc on so many.

It will never happen. Bush would never, ever, in a million years do that. I have no respect for Bush's judgement and I do in fact, believe him to be a moron, but he would have to be a moron with a prison fetish to ever nominate Fitzgerald and Bush cares way too much for his own ass to do that. Ain't happening. Amusing that someone even suggested it. I mean, really amusing, laugh out loud amusing.
