Ex-astronaut planning insanity defense
By TRAVIS REED, Associated Press

ORLANDO, Fla. - Former astronaut Lisa Nowak is pursuing an insanity defense on charges that she assaulted and tried to kidnap a romantic rival, according to a document released Tuesday.

Defense attorney Donald Lykkebak wrote that Nowak suffered from major depression, obsessive-compulsive disorder, insomnia and "brief psychotic disorder with marked stressors." He noted that the already-petite Nowak had recently lost 15 percent of her body weight.

"This notice does not challenge competence to stand trial, but only raises insanity at the time of the offense," he wrote.

Nowak, 44, was charged with attempted kidnapping, battery and burglary with assault after allegedly driving nearly 1,000 miles from Houston to Orlando to confront Colleen Shipman, the girlfriend of a former space shuttle pilot Nowak had been involved with. She was dismissed from the astronaut corps a month after her arrest.

6. I am glad you rethought your comment
Hitler was a brilliant strategist and look at what a lunatic he was.

Same with Ted Bundy, the serial rapist and murderer of dozens of women across America.

4. I hope the boyfriend has to testify
I think Bill Oefelein, former astronaut and love interest of both Nowak and Colleen Shipman, should sit on the stand in the trial of Nowak and explain how all of this came about--his relationship with both women.

There are women who would sell their souls for a man, and I think this is the case with Nowak, who left her husband and probably didn't have her kids foremost in her mind when she got involved with Oefelein.

He is probably what we women call an "outlaw," whom we tend to be drawn to for some reason, and he is a womanizer and probably a candidate for intense vanity. I would tell Colleen Shipman that her "boyfriend" is probably already involved with yet another woman and she too might be stalking the newcomer.

9. yeah, let's blame her behavior on the guy. His charm rendered her helpless
You make a lot of assumptions based on incomplete information and your imagination. Curious, is this a pattern that you have fallen into in your life, and perhaps want to project that onto her?

11. As far as I'm aware of, there was no relationship, it was something she created in her head...
and there it remained. An unhealthy obsession, to say the least.

10. Or maybe it is behavior you identify with?
Let's let the guy take the stand and let's find out just who did what and when. There are always two sides to every story.

12. Do you base your entire life on faulty assumptions?
If so, it is no wonder that you can identify with this woman.

13. Before posting an attack, you should make sure you are on the right thread or meds
This is about a WOMAN ASTRONAUT, and I was expressing that she should plead insanity based on what I have seen.

That ok, mr loonie?

14. Google Lisa Nowak and her boyfriend
and read way back in time and you will see that Lisa and Bill Oefelein knew each other for years, that they were "just friends" for a long time, things got closer, and even after he was seeing Shipman he was also seeing Nowak, even going to the gym with her. It took Oefelein quite awhile to finally tell Nowak that he was intimate with another woman.

I think he is a creep and I hope he gets blasted on the stand during her trial in September. He did lose his job as astronaut for some reason.

15. Ok. Now I know why you care about this case. YOU ARE NUTS TOO!
So, by your twisted logic, it isn't insane to stalk with intent to MURDER your boyfriend's other girlfriend, because they had something going for a while?

Oooh boy, are you nuts.

Creep or not, how in the FUCK does that mean it would be ok for her to kill the other woman?!?!? I mean, that's ten shades of crazy!

So fucking what if he had another girlfriend? They WEREN'T MARRIED.

Good lord.
