BOISE, Idaho (CNN) -- Sen. Larry Craig will temporarily step down from his committee assignments, CNN has learned.

Also on Wednesday, three Republican lawmakers, including Sen. John McCain, called on Craig to resign.

Their statements came a day after Craig made his first public statement about pleading guilty to a disorderly conduct charge relating to allegations the Idaho Republican solicited sex in a Minneapolis airport bathroom.

"I believe that he pleaded guilty, and he had the opportunity to plead innocent," McCain, of Arizona, said. "So, I think he should resign. My opinion is that when you plead guilty to a crime you shouldn't serve."

4. I was just reading about this in the Idaho Statesman
"Sen. Craig gives up four Senate committee seats; colleagues call for resignation"

Sen. Larry Craig has agreed to temporarily give up his seats on four Senate Committees at the request of Senate Republican leadership, while his political support eroded significantly today when three fellow Republicans in Congress called for his resignation.

Craig gave up his posts as the top Republican on the Veteran Affairs Committee, Appropriations Subcommittee on the Interior, and Energy and Natural Resources Subcommittee on Public Lands and Forests.

"This is not a decision we take lightly but we believe this is in the best interest of the Senate until this situation is resolved by the Ethics Committee,” said Republican Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, Republican Whip Trent Lott, Conference Chairman Jon Kyl, Policy Committee Chair Kay Bailey Hutchison, and Senatorial Committee Chair John Ensign.

Sens. John McCain of Arizona and Norm Coleman of Minnesota and Rep. Pete Hoekstra of Michigan all said Craig should give up his seat in Congress.

11. When I see that Coleman has said anything, I immediately believe that
whatever it is - it was ordered by the WH - that's why Coleman is there. Not fair? Sorry, it just keeps popping up in my head. He is not an independent operator.

21. What kind of self-respecting bureaucrat ,
like the chief of police at this airport, is going to arrest a freaking US Senator for a freaking toilet charge? And then go through the whole book'em routine? And then blab about it?

Craig got himself on somebody's shitlist, that's for damn sure.

8. Apparently Idaho is considering charging him with perjury
He lied when he pleaded guilty. This is about all of his I am not Gay statements. I think he should stick around for a while. To me, his hypocricy is the major problem, but the repukes are going to suffer from foot in mouth disease from all this.

15. Idaho governor is (R), so GOP calls for resignation. Vitter is from LA, where gov is (D)
no calls for resignation on that front.

This really, really sounds like a typical GOP trick to get rid of some troublesome impediment to one of their horrible scams.
