Baghdad, Aug 31, (VOI) – Fifty Iraqi prisoners will be released on a daily basis from U.S. army detention in the country during the holy Muslim fasting month of Ramadan, the office of Iraqi Vice President Tareq al-Hashimi announced on Friday.

"The initiative comes in the framework of a campaign launched by Hashimi to release innocent detainees," Hashimi's human rights adviser, Omar al-Juburi, was quoted as saying in a statement received by the independent news agency Voices of Iraq (VOI).
"A meeting was held to consider information gathered after the vice president visited the al-Tasfirat prison (Prison No. 5)," said Juburi, adding that a working paper prepared by Hashimi's office "has won the approval of political blocs and the U.S. side."

According to Hashimi's office the number of detainees to be released will increase to 350 on a weekly basis in Baghdad and other provinces.

1. Rather than rounding up a bunch of innocents and magnanimously releasing them during Ramadan,
wouldn't the smarter PR move be to not have detained them in the first place?

2. And now that they are ready to release them
why not just release them now, instead of keeping people who don't belong there in prison for even longer, in order to do some arbitrary symbolic bs release each day of the holiday?
