"The initiative comes in the framework of a campaign launched by Hashimi to release innocent detainees," Hashimi's human rights adviser, Omar al-Juburi, was quoted as saying in a statement received by the independent news agency Voices of Iraq (VOI).
"A meeting was held to consider information gathered after the vice president visited the al-Tasfirat prison (Prison No. 5)," said Juburi, adding that a working paper prepared by Hashimi's office "has won the approval of political blocs and the U.S. side."
According to Hashimi's office the number of detainees to be released will increase to 350 on a weekly basis in Baghdad and other provinces.
