Warner expected to announce end of Senate career
Source: The Examiner

Richmond (Map, News) - Sen. John Warner, R-Va., is expected to announce today that he will not seek re-election, Republican officials said Thursday.

According to GOP campaign and congressional sources, the 80-year-old Warner has informed them he will retire when his fifth term ends at the end of next year. Political analysts, however, cautioned that Warner may not come to a final decision until he steps up to the microphone at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, where he is scheduled to appear at 2 p.m.

Think about it. VA goes from Allen and John Warner to Webb and Mark Warner in just two years.

2. And Another One Bites the Dust!
I should be glad, but the pipeline of new Democrats worries me. Are there enough good candidates out there?

4. Um. I don't think Warner ever went so far as to speak against the war.
He's expressed reservations, but that's about as far as he's gone. He has no intention of stopping Chimpy.

6. Va. Senator Warner Will Not Seek Sixth Term
Va. Senator Warner Will Not Seek Sixth Term

By Bill Turque

Virginia Sen. John W. Warner, one of Washington's most influential voices on defense policy, whose political plans could have a significant impact on the partisan makeup of a narrowly divided Senate, announced today that he will not seek a sixth term.

Warner, 80, announced his decision at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, where he received his law degree in 1953. His retirement is unwelcome news for his fellow Republicans, who hope to take control of the Senate next year. Democrats hold a 51 to 49 lead.

John Warner (R-Va.) is the second-longest serving member of the U.S. Senate. A staunch supporter of the military, Warner has served as chairman of the Senate Armed services committee and is a veteran of two wars -- World War II and Korea. He has been a critic of the Bush administration's handling of the war in Iraq.

He had been expected to make an announcement after Labor Day, but aides declined to explain the apparent change of plan or elaborate on his decision.
