Sen. Craig likely to make announcement Saturday morning

Gregory Hahn and Erika Bolstad - Idaho Statesman
Edition Date: 08/31/07

Sen. Larry Craig plans to make an announcement Saturday about his future.

"We haven't quite scheduled anything, but we're looking at doing something tomorrow," said Craig's spokesman Sid Smith. "We haven't set a time or place yet."

The clamor for Craig to step down intensified today, with the news that the Republican Party had been prepared to issue a statement calling for his resignation, a GOP source said today.

But they didn’t put it out because “party leaders had received an indication that Craig was going to step down,” on his own, the source told McClatchy Newspapers.

The Republican Party chairman, Sen. Mel Martinez of Florida, was on a plane headed back from Jordan, and was not expected to comment until he returned to the U.S. Until now, Martinez has said only that Craig’s arrest and guilty plea is “disappointing” and a “sad situation.

The Idaho Statesman had previously indicated that Gov Otter seemed ready to appoint Lt Gov Risch as Craig's replacement when this happens.

6. Hiding out under the cover of a long holiday weekend. So there won't
be as much press. He certainly has taken a page from this White House. Bad news? Try to dump it on Friday or Saturday.

Except where he miscalculated was that this was a SEX scandal. SEX, SEX, SEX. That's what EVERYBODY can get their brains around, whether they're friends or foes, media or civilian, left or wrong, informed or uninformed. It's one of those grab-yer-gut, fits-on-a-bumper-sticker stories that everyone gets. And gets titilated over. And enjoys gossiping over.

Sex scandals NEVER just "go away." Not in THIS puritanical, prissy-ass, bedroom-busybody, twisted political era.

9. Damn, I bet $5 it would be today. Sure thing, though.
He must have really dug in his heels to make it as far as Saturday. I have seen "sure things," and Larry Craig's resignation was as much a sure thing as anything anytime - even with the reich wing yahoo talk radio nuts tying themselves up in knots trying to back him ("What about Clinton?. . .").

As ever, Sean Hannity was the surest barometer of the GOP power brokers. When he led with the story on Hannity and ? last night, you knew the marching orders had gone out: Cut Craig Loose.

and attack us for every single thing they can think of, or make up. They are energized, and they need a target.

unfortunately, our dems are a juicy one.

Of course, they will call this
"old hat"
"over"
"yesterday's news"
"history"
and more, except when they feel like whipping out Bill Clinton's penis again.

24. I will say this
While I loathe him probably more than he loathes himself, and while I think he's an arrogant jackass, I wouldn't wish the media crucible on anyone. He's taken a real battering this week. We are watching not just the end of a successful career, but the destruction of a man. And that should always be a sobering thing, in the end.

I don't wish Senator Craig ill. Despite the carnival hilarity on the surface of it all, it is really a very sad story. Few will thank him for his years of service. Few will remain his friends. He is about to be a very lonely man, going quietly into that good night.

If they were going to lose a seat they'd figure a way to keep Craig int he Senate.

Think of Vitter!
