CALIFORNIA ASSEMBLY PASSES IRAQ BALLOT MEASURE

After nearly two hours of passionate debate, the California Assembly
approved legislation Monday to ask voters whether they support ending
the Iraq War and immediately withdrawing troops.

<snip>

The bill also asks whether the United States should provide the "necessary diplomatic and nonmilitary assistance to promote peace and stability in Iraq and the Middle East."

Monday's Assembly vote was largely along party lines, 43-32, with no Republicans supporting SB 924. Assemblywoman Nicole Parra, D-Hanford, was the only Democrat to oppose it.

This is great news! I hope other states will follow suit.

Let's get this on the ballot in all 50 states and send Congress and the White House a message that's loud and clear: Americans are united in wanting to bring our troops home.

1. I doubt the Governator will sign it. Very cool anyway.
I hope Arnie surprises me and lets this get on the ballot!

2. And if he doesn't sign it
Edited on Sun Sep-02-07 03:41 AM by Popol Vuh
I hope campaign adds point out that he, against the wishes of so many people, forced a special election to have us Californians vote on his personal agendas. But now on the other hand won't sign a bill putting on the ballot an issue so many people would want to vote on.

I hope he surprises me too. I want the world to know how we Californians feel and that we are by far not the only ones here in the U.S. who feel the way we do.

16. Unfortunately that won't matter
He can't be up for re-election. It could kill his chances for the Senate if he were to be so stupid though.

11. Here's my post!
California is the most populous and the richest state. As a result, this war is costing Californians more lives of young people and more money than most. An official count of public opinion on this costly and tragic war will surely guide state officials and federal officials elected by Californians to represent them in Congress and the Senate as to what they really want, what they are really willing to endure, what they are really willing to pay. Anyone who obstructs getting to the true will of the people is surely someone who knows they are currently not doing that will, and who will fear the results of Californians being allowed to officially speak their minds. Let's have the vote, let's have the truth, let's have a real say in this ongoing bleed of blood and treasure from the great state of California!

Hope this helps.

She is proud to announce her membership in the DLC. Check out her website.

I am sorry to see that she has turned out so bad in her last term in office, she must think that she will need them to run for state senate or a state wide office.

on edit: the link to the Para notes that announce her DLC membership

7. I never saw the point in these things...
when city councils, and state assemblys pass messures in which they have no power to. As I said many times, it only gets ignored.

Correct me if I am mistaken. If Swarz... vetoes it, it goes on the pres. primary ballot.

15. I'm guessing it's for future campaign soundbytes
really, like if they spend state funds to put it on a ballot it will make everything all better as if it never happened ?
imo, its a waste of state resources . But they will have face time shots for future campaign ads

12. Ignored at their own peril.
When official guidance is given to elected officials by those whom they are supposed to represent and they ignore it, they cannot plead that they never heard anyone voice that, that they never knew so many thought that, that they were never informed and had only they known, blah, blah blah.

This type of thing puts the bastards on official notice. See the careers affected by those promoting the Vietnam war to the end, promoting Pol Pot to the end, promoting any of these atrocities to the end.

Those who do not listen will not need their ears when they are buried in the next election.

This is the value. An official notice. Not some "scruffy" or "ragtag" group pushing an agenda. Official results.

19. Kentucky has an election for governor coming up in November; that
would be an excellent time to vote on such a measure. However, if the legislature has to put it on the ballot, they are not in session.
