Battle lines drawn for Bush, Congress on Iraq

by Stephen Collinson Sun Sep 2, 3:42 AM ET
.......

"Our troops are seeing this progress that is being made on the ground," Bush said on Tuesday.

"Will their elected leaders in Washington pull the rug out from under them just as theyÂ’re gaining momentum and changing the dynamic on the ground in Iraq?"

An intense Republican media offensive is underway, with television advertising, and comments by top officials and commentators, seizing on assessments of military progress by academics who visited Iraq US generals........

The president's former chief speechwriter Michael Gerson last week declared in a Washington Post column of a "season of hope in Iraq."

"A few months ago, it was the received wisdom that Iraq was in the midst of a rapidly escalating civil war. That claim is no longer plausible," Gerson wrote.

1. Bush knows from past history he has no problems from congressional democrats
who will give him what he wants. There is always hope that will change. Hope is about all there is however.

3. Why don't we give the soldiers a vote?
Take a secret poll of those who are deployed or about to be, and see whether they want to stay. Why should Bush or anyone else speak for them when they can speak for themselves?

I believe our soldiers have the integrity to vote for staying, if they think it's worth it.

But they ought to be able to say so, if they don't.

4. I have thought that as well. When they interview the troops it is always when they are together
I thought if they interviewed them separately and anonymously we would get a different picture.

8. The only battle lines are in Iraq...
...and at the local level, where families get the worst news every day. Washington has given up, and will let * hide his failure behind lies until the day he leaves office.

There are a few reps at the national level willing to push, but they are outnumbered by the war pigs.
