Roberts Suggested Miers, Book Says

Author Delves Inside Bush Controversies

Monday, September 3, 2007; Page A01

John G. Roberts Jr., now the chief justice of the United States, suggested Harriet Miers to President Bush as a possible Supreme Court justice, according to a new book on the Bush presidency.

Miers, the White House counsel and a Bush loyalist from Texas, did not want the job, but Bush and first lady Laura Bush prevailed on her to accept the nomination, journalist Robert Draper writes in "Dead Certain: The Presidency of George W. Bush."

Karl Rove, Bush's top political adviser, raised concerns about the selection but was "shouted down" and subsequently muted his objections, while other advisers did not realize the outcry it would cause within the president's conservative political base, Draper writes.

(snip)

In recounting this and other controversies of Bush's tenure, Draper offers an intimate portrait of a White House racked by more infighting than is commonly portrayed and of a president who would, alternately, intensely review speeches line by line or act strangely disengaged from big issues.

1. I don't buy the "intensly reviewed soeeches" line!
I was again last week when Shrub couldn't even give a heartfealt thank you to Gonzo when he announced his departure. He had to READ the damn written speech!

I hate to keep comparing him to Clinton, but DAMN! I remember the story about the time the prompter went out during one of Bill's speeches, and even the Press didn't know it until after it was over! Bill just kept on talking to everyone. No script. No prompter. Just off the cuff. Ohhhh, how I'd love to see that happen to Shrub...JUST ONCE!

2. Does this mean what I think it means??--confirmation that Bush is drinking?
Here's the quote:

Draper writes that Bush was "gassed" after an 80-minute bike ride at his Crawford, Tex., ranch on the day before Hurricane Katrina struck the Gulf Coast and was largely silent during a subsequent video briefing from then-FEMA director Michael D. Brown and other top officials making preparations for the storm.

Is there another meaning for "gassed" than being intoxicated? If so, this should blow the roof off--a mainstream source pointing this out. Does anyone have a different explanation?

3. I would read it as he was totally exhausted, or out of gas
after an 80 minute bike ride. I wouldn't read it as being drunk, anybody else?

4. Hmmm--I get your meaning, but here is the definition according to Dictionary.com
"Gassed" is slang for being drunk or intoxicated. So you can see my confusion. If this is being talked about openly, isn't this big news?

5. Indeed? "Gassed"?
In this particular context - after an 80-minute bike ride, I'd wonder if it had anything to do with being "high" like you get with all those endorphins doing the happy dance after you've just had a vigorous workout - OR.... in the context of it merely applying to george w. bush, I'd be tempted to think it involves being high on booze or pills or something.

6. Nope - people doing heavy workouts will refer to being
gassed as being out of energy after a workout. That's how I took it. BTW, this book is supposed to be somewhat favorable to Bush - he even granted the author an interview.

7. Jumping Jack Flash is a gas, gas, gas...
I was born in a cross-fire hurricane
And I howled at my ma in the driving rain,
But its all right now, in fact, its a gas!
But its all right. Im jumpin jack flash,
Its a gas! gas! gas!

I was raised by a toothless, bearded hag,
I was schooled with a strap right across my back,
But its all right now, in fact, its a gas!
But its all right, Im jumpin jack flash,
Its a gas! gas! gas!

I was drowned, I was washed up and left for dead.
I fell down to my feet and I saw they bled.
I frowned at the crumbs of a crust of bread.
Yeah, yeah, yeah
I was crowned with a spike right thru my head.
But its all right now, in fact, its a gas!
But its all right, Im jumpin jack flash,
Its a gas! gas! gas!

Jumping jack flash, its a gas
Jumping jack flash, its a gas
Jumping jack flash, its a gas
Jumping jack flash, its a gas
Jumping jack flash

An oddly appropriate term for Bush, given the hurricane reference.

10. No doubt bush used the term himself, leaving the author confused and at a loss to
interpret it in his own words. Bush's vernacular is short of spectacular. In fact, it's craptacular.

9. Don't you wish you had teams of people helping you get your exercise in?
Draper offers some intriguing details about Bush's personal habits, such as his intense love of biking. He reports that White House advance teams and the Secret Service "devoted inordinate energy to satisfying Bush's need for biking trails," descending on a town a couple of days before the president's arrival to find secluded hotels and trails the boss would find challenging.
