Book says Souter mulled resignation after Bush v. Gore
September 4, 1:18 AM

‘The Nine’

According to Jeffrey Toobin’s new book on the Supreme Court, Justice David Souter nearly resigned in the

wake of Bush v. Gore, so distraught was he over the decision that effectively ended the Florida recount and installed George W. Bush as president.

In “The Nine,” which goes on sale Sept. 18, Toobin writes that while the other justices tried to put the case behind them, “David Souter alone was shattered,” at times weeping when he thought of the case. “For many months, it was not at all clear whether he would remain as a justice,” Toobin continues. “That the Court met in a city he loathed made the decision even harder. At the urging of a handful of close friends, he decided to stay on, but his attitude toward the Court was never the same.”

Souter isn’t all despair in Toobin’s book, however. The author relates a story in which Souter played along with a stranger who mistook him for Justice Stephen Breyer. After the person asked him what the best thing about being on the court was, he replied: “Well, I’d have to say it’s the privilege of serving with David Souter.”

A court spokeswoman could not be reached over the weekend.

1. "The Nine," my shiny metal ass!
It was THE FIVE. The only votes that got counted in 2000.

3. If Souter had resigned, we could have had Justice Gonzo
There's a scary thought--Gonzo on the bench for life. Could have happened.

"......“David Souter alone was shattered,” at times weeping when he thought of the case......"

Instead we have that conservative zombie, Roberts.

5. Some people -- I won't say whom -- really should read the article...
Edited on Tue Sep-04-07 11:05 AM by Stand and Fight
More interesting though are the comments by the virulent right-wingers. These people have serious, SERIOUS, delusions in regards to history. Can you believe that some idiot actually thinks that:

FDR ended the great depression, that american involvement in WW2 was necessary, social security helps america, democrats secured cvil liberities for blacks. The true modern liberal legacy is 12 trillion in debt, broken homes, failing schools, and greater dependency of all on incompetent big government...btw Truman never penned the containment policy. It amazing how modern liberalism dominates media but fears rush limbaugh...too funny.....modern liberals like nazis and soviets fear dissent

These idiots actually think that Bush won and that he's doing a great job! They believe that Souter has done more damage than Bush. What a pathetic parade of fools on that blog.

:eyes: Good grief.

And I won't even talk about having to spell check through that quote...

they could have been posted from anywhere, after all. Unfortunately, I live amongst them.

7. The vote did kill Judge Rehnquist
Think about this Rehnquist died after the idiot president F$KKKED up after his non-response to Hurricane Katrina. I hope the rest of the members of the supreme court get a good grasp on instant karma.

And he's not the only one who cried after that crap December 12th decision.

11. It's really chicken-shit to blame Nader. The REAL blame belongs to the REPUKES!
They stole the election in Florida. Christ, even Buchanan acknowledged that most of the votes that he got didn't belong to him. And what about the other third party candidates? To focus on Nader is to mis-construe history and not accurately understand the nature of the thugs who seized power in 2000. Unfortunately the Democrats didn't understand what really happened in 2000 and allowed it to happen again in 2004 (with more sophisticated techniques). It will happen again in 2008 no matter who runs unless the DEMs keep a eye on the magicians hands and not his diversions.

14. People blame Nader because allegedly he is "on our side"
We EXPECT the Republicans to lie, cheat, and steal to get what they want. They are the enemy. What we don't - and shouldn't - condone is when one of our "own," a fellow "progressive," helps them do it because his ego is more important than the country.

17. Let's not forget Breyer and the venerable Stevens, may he live forever
Justice Stevens is 87 years young. My recurring nightmare is Stevens leaving the court before Bush leaves office. :scared:

19. Thank God he stayed on. We forget how many have sacrificed how much to even slow
the rise of BushPutinism the little bit it has, and sort of give the Old American Republic a swan song on it's way out.

I share Souter's feelings about the "Court". I would go further and say it doesn't even qualify as a court anymore, but serves the Imperials pretty wholeheartedly with the tiniest and usually cosmetic dissents from the Bush Imperium.
