World Record Holder Fossett Missing
Source: lahontan valley news

Searchers are looking for world aviation record holder Steve Fossett, who was reported missing Monday night.
Fossett, 63, was last seen taking off from the Hilton Ranch south of Smith
Valley in a single engine Citabria Super Decathlon heading south.
Civil Air Patrol Nevada Wing Mission Public Information Officer Maj. Cynthia
S. Ryan said three crews are in the air looking for Fossett’s blue and white
aircraft and that more are on the way.
“We will be launching more shortly,” she said.
The search area covers hundreds of square miles of rugged terrain. The Civil
Air Patrol has called area airports looking for Fossett.
Fossett made the first solo nonstop, non-refueled circumnavigation of the
world in 67 hours in the Virgin Atlantic GlobalFlyer. In 2002 he was the
first person to solo around the world in a balloon. He holds several world
soaring records, according to his Web site, stevefossett.com.
He was in Sparks in August preparing a jet vehicle to break the land speed
record at Bonneville Flats.

5. It would be horribly ironic if he was killed in a small plane crash near home
Given his accomplishments in long distance flight.

7. Hope he's OK.
According to his website, one of my old college boyfriends is one of his assistants and also the brother of former TX Senate candidate (in '06) Barbara Radnofsky. Small world.

Hope he's OK.

10. Adventurer Steve Fossett goes missing
Source: MSNBC/AP

MINDEN, Nev. - Millionaire adventurer Steve Fossett, who has cheated death time and again in his successful pursuit of aviation records, was missing Tuesday after taking off in a single-engine plane the day before to scout locations for a land-speed record, officials said.

Teams searched a broad swath of rugged terrain in western Nevada near the ranch where he took off, but searchers had little to go on because he apparently didn’t file a flight plan, a Federal Aviation Administration spokesman said.

“They are working on some leads, but they don’t know where he is right now,” FAA spokesman Ian Gregor said.

As a pilot I ALWAYS file a flight plan unless I am staying within about 10 miles of the airport. Hope they find him.
