Senator Larry Craig reconsidering resignation
Source: AP

Washington - AP, September 4, 2007) - Sen. Larry Craig is reconsidering his decision to resign after his arrest in a Minnesota airport sex sting and may still fight for his Senate seat, his spokesman said Tuesday evening.

"It's not such a foregone conclusion anymore, that the only thing he could do was resign," said Sidney Smith, Craig's spokesman in Idaho's capital.

"We're still preparing as if Senator Craig will resign Sept. 30, but the outcome of the legal case in Minnesota and the ethics investigation will have an impact on whether we're able to stay in the fight - and stay in the Senate."

Pretty much from what I have read, the threat from the Repigs is that they burn him if he decides to stay.

86. I wish that were true . . . but my impression on the rePigs that live
here and in nearby states is that they would vote for a restroom-trolling "pervert" than vote for a Dem.

(flamers - please note that I am absolutely not calling gays perverts. But - those that cruise public restrooms may be close. I am only characterizing the voters from this area of the U.S. and their choices.)

Craig was a no-show Tuesday as Congress reconvened after a summer break and it wasn't clear whether he'll return at all since deciding to resign over his guilty plea in a sex sting this summer at the Minneapolis airport.

Another spokesman, Dan Whiting in Washington, said Tuesday that Craig was expected to spend the week in Idaho as the Senate votes on spending bills for veterans and other programs. Whiting did not rule out Craig's returning to Washington before the end of the month.

32. Good for Larry Craig. Why should he be held to a higher standard than Vitter?
The double standard that the GOP has established between their two U.S.Senators is breathtaking!

Vitter's involvement in illegal prostitution, cheating on his wife, covering it up and lying about it until it was brought out against his wishes is no different than what Larry Craig has done with one glaring exception:

Vitter would be replaced by a Democratic Governor, while Craig can be replaced by a Republican governor.

And the fact (and this is the knife's cutting edge of the double standard) that Senator Vitter's situation has not been even reviewed by the Senate Ethics Committee, which the Senate Rules & Regulations REQUIRE, proves that Vitter is being protected in order to keep his seat in the Republican's control.

Should Vitter be investigated by the Senate Ethics Committee, the ugly truth about his sordid and illegal behavior would merit the GOP to push him also to resign.

Bully for Senator Craig! I hope he tells his hypocritical, gas-bag fellow Republicans the following:

"You know what, I'm no more guilty that Senator Vitter of anything and unless you pressure him out, I'm staying."

The worse that could happen to Craig has already happened, he can only go up from here. But the same can not be said for his fellow Republicans in the Senate.

That old Larry Craig is not such a dummy after all.

Here's hoping that Larry makes the sweat like Nixon now.

He made a mistake. We all make mistakes. A silly misdemeanor crime (where no one was hurt) shouldn't ruin his life.

61.  Sen. Craig may reconsider resignation, spokesman says
Source: cnn

Sen. Larry Craig of Idaho may reconsider his resignation if he is cleared of a disorderly conduct charge to which he pleaded guilty last month, his spokesman told CNN on Tuesday.

Dan Whiting said it was still the GOP senator's intention to resign effective September 30, "however, he is fighting these charges and should he be cleared before then, he may -- I emphasize may -- not resign."

On Sunday, Sen. Arlen Specter, R-Pennsylvania, said he would like to see Craig fight the allegations against him. But on Tuesday, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky said he expected Craig's resignation to be final.

Meanwhile, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, a Democrat from Nevada, returned from the Senate's summer recess and made his first public comments on Craig's sudden downfall. He suggested that Republican leaders judged Craig more harshly than they did Republican Sen. David Vitter, of Louisiana, who was recently linked to a heterosexual prostitution service.

64. The die is cast ....
It's too late to slip out from under the dark cloud, even IF he were successful in reversing the guilty plea (which is unlikely)

Too many people have already loudly scoffed at his excuses ......

I hope he DOES stay..... and run for another term ....

GO 'Wide Stance' Craig !

73. Let him stay... he deserves a good lesson...
about the wrath of bigots... does anybody still believe he is straight? I wouldn't care about his sexual orientation if he didn't fight against gays throughout his tenure, so let him burn. Hang in there, Craig. The longer you stay in public office, the more people will dig into your past.

67. Stuck in the swirling vortex of doom
Craig is now either gonna have to deny he's resigning
or he's gonna have to resign all over again. Bwahahaha.

Only a republican can make such a f'd up mess of things.

Wow.

68. Specter suggested Craig withdraw his plea.
That makes me nervous. Like something will happen, and Craig's vote is necessary.

No, sir. I don't like it.

83. Yeah, but don't forget, no one really went after Nixon
...with the proper vengence until they were sure Spiro wouldn't succeed him. I was 18 during Watergate, and I don't remember anyone calling for Agnew's impeachment.

The way I see it, Spiro resigning removed the last obstacle to go after Nixon. It would never happen with Cheney. Idiot Chimp may be the Decider, but Big Dick is the real president. No matter how many times he needs the Crash Cart, he ain't goin' anywhere unless we impeach him.

As for Craig, I've heard Chatter that Specter told him his resignation would be an admission--not only of his guilt, but of the fact that he really is (*gasp!*) GAY!!!! So that's the big reason he's reconsidering.

I hope he stays in the Senate until November 2008, then runs for re-election! I LOVE it when the repigs are hoisted by their own petards (and their own hypocricy.)

72. Maybe Larry will come out as gay in the court...
...but that would be hoping too much from this coward and closet case.

But seriously, Larry's trial might ignite a real discussion about why closeted married men cruise restrooms for sex.

74. This is a win-win situation for the Dems.....
...any way you cut it. If the Dems ever had a shot at all for winning in Idaho, it would be because the state Repuke party is splintered. But the Repukes there have already dumped poor Wide-Stance and he's become toxic waste. No one wants him, and no one knows where to put him. Except to tell him to get the hell out of Dodge before sundown.

But for Wide-Stance, what better way to gain some leverage for his "retirement fund" than to deny the Repukes a better shot at keeping the seat, than to deny them the an heir apparent. This is better than a soap.

Go Wide-Stance Go!!! Go Wide-Stance Go!!! Go Wide-Stance Go!!! Go Wide-Stance Go!!!

What in the world was Arlen thinking? He musta been hammered, and felt bad for Larry and gave him a drunken "I Love Ya Man." phone call. Larry being the DUMB ASS that he is took this as a rallying cry of approval and he is now un-resigning. BEAUTIFUL! Way to go Arlen. Wide Stance is gonna burn your mother fucking party to the ground. I AM SO LOVING THIS.

84. What good news for Dems. Does Larry honestly think other
people he might have been associated with won't come forward if offered big bucks by tabloids and other sources? He's taking an uncomfortable and recoverable position and turning it into a circus. And what good timing - in an election cycle.

89. Craig's Lawyers: 'Senate Has No Business' looking into the conduct of one of it's own
AP) Boise, Idaho One of Sen. Larry Craig's lawyers said Wednesday the Senate has no business looking into the conduct of one of its own following Craig's guilty plea in connection with an airport men's room sex sting.

An unbroken line of precedents dating back 220 years makes clear the Senate does not consider misdemeanor private conduct to be a fit subject of inquiry, asserted Washington attorney Stan Brand.

"We ought to seek to have the committee dismiss this outright," Brand said of a Senate ethics panel's investigation. "The Republican leadership called for an ethics investigation that had nothing to do with his office," said Brand on NBC's "Today" show.

Craig says he may still fight for his Senate seat, a spokesman says -- if the lawmaker can clear his name with the Senate ethics panel and a Minnesota court.

94. I think he should stay - really, what has Craig done wrong?
I mean Vitters was using prostitutes, which last time I checked is illegal just about anywhere in this country other than certain regions in Nevada.

Having anonymous sex in the bathroom is not a crime unless both parties are not consenting. As far as I know - Craig never offered any money for the undercover cop's services. I'm still not even sure what crime that Craig truly committed.

BTW - when is the ethics committee going to investigate Ted Stevens.

Leave Larry Craig alone or give Vitters and Stevens equally harsh treatment that Craig is receiving.

99. Yes, it's illegal
Even if money isn't involved, it's considered "lewd behavior" whether it's gay sex or hetero sex. It's probably just a misdemeanor, but it's still illegal.
