Source: NY Daily News

Fooled again.

Chemicals discovered in the United Nations' Manhattan offices - feared to be a toxic agent produced by Saddam Hussein's regime a decade ago - may be nothing worse than a cleaning solvent, sources said yesterday.

Preliminary tests show the substance, which was found Aug. 24, was not the potentially fatal phosgene, sources said.

"It's not phosgene, and it tested negative for all other chemical warfare agents. It's not dangerous, and it's not what they thought they had," a law enforcement source said.

2. I'd wondered
I remember accidently spilling some carbon tet <used as a switch cleaner> on some bath cleaning powder <used for polishing marks out> back in the early sixties when I was a tv engineer. The result cleared the workshop PDQ.

8. And where will the 'correction' run?
Every newspaper and broadcast outlet that breathlessly ran with this story should be required to run a correction in the same space and with equal prominence.

Of course, we can't require them to do this by law, but we can make a big stink about those news organizations that won't.

10. The disappointment amongst the frothers...
Will be palpable. They saw this as evidence of the UN hiding Saddam's WMDs.

Poor little maroons...It's all falling down around their ears.
