Al Gore readying new environmental book
By HILLEL ITALIE, AP National Writer

NEW YORK - For those frightened by the tale of global warming in Al Gore's "An Inconvenient Truth," and wondering what can be done, the former vice president has an answer: a sequel.

Gore is working on a new environmental book, "The Path to Survival," that will be released as a paperback original on April 22, 2008, Earth Day. According to publisher Rodale Books, Gore will continue where he left off in "An Inconvenient Truth" and offer "a visionary blueprint for the changes we should make as a world community."

"He (Gore) explains how making bold choices now to protect our environment will also create new jobs, propel sustainable economic improvements, and inspire a new generation to tackle our most challenging issues with moral leadership," according to a statement issued Wednesday by Rodale.

"Part scientific manual, part expose, part visionary call for a new planet-wide political movement, the book will appeal to those who were motivated by the call to action of `An Inconvenient Truth' and who are now ready to fight for the solutions that were considered politically impossible only a short time ago."

1. Nice...but I have to think he would be much more effective
fighting global warming as president of the United States.

2. Many credit him with almost single-handedly making the issue a priority in the world
I think a few more thank you's would be more fitting than the constant harassing drumbeat he receives from so many around here.

14. Calling out?
What calling out?

I'm confused...who's calling out whom and for what purpose?

13. I've seen a lot of thank yous
many in fact. I've been one of the thanker's too.

The point I was making (and others have made) is that Al Gore is a special individual who we need as president in order to be more effective at his ultimate goal.

Don't be so defensive.

15. I've seen more of the other thing, but maybe you're right
I shouldn't be so defensive. I came in and the first and only post was saying how Gore "would be much more effective if..." and I felt like screaming "HE'S BEEN MORE EFFECTIVE THAN ANYONE!!!".

I don't subscribe to the idea that he needs to be president to succeed in moving the world where it needs to go. His success outside of the USA has been astounding. He would never achive that as POTUS.
Within the USA perhaps he could do more as POTUS by force, but the battle is for minds.

12. Campaign book?
Jesus...campaign already!

I'm all for Al getting in the race and was hoping he would. I'd say the odds of that are very low at this point though.

He has identified an area that is important and that he wants to devote his full attention to. That is wonderful. I just think he could be more effective in working toward saving the environment if he was President of the United States. Sadly, it doesn't look like that is going to be.

34. Yes, but, sadly, the writing of this book between now and April indicates ...
... that he won't be entering the race. :(

However, any Democrat in the White House would likely be more open to Gore's proposals than another Republican.

Laws need to be changed. He has a lot of influence now, but as President,
he would be unstoppable in fighting the causes of global warming.

10. Why are you so angry in this thread?
It's a thread about a great man doing more wonderful work. There's nothing that's been said to warrant your anger.

Gore is a remarkable man with a list of remarkable accomplishments. You calling out DUers and twisting peoples words doesn't make that any more or less so.

I could see you're being angry if posters were saying he was wrong, or foolish for committing his life to this worthy cause. But they're not, they just either wish he were our president (and think about what a wonderful change it would have been instead of bush), or that we(humans) have really screwed up the world.

Relax a bit. We really are all on the same side and as far as I can tell we all respect and love Gore and support his work.

Perhaps you should save this for those few among us on DU that like to drag up ancient dirt on Gore and actually don't respect him?

16. A little bit of sarcasm does not equal anger.
The poster made a VERY negative and cynical comment about how a better title for Gore's book would be "handbasket to hell". My response was appropriate.

We're NOT in the handbasket to hell, and those who suggest we are need to be reminded that attidute only nourishes apathy.

I'm not "twisting" anyone's words, but feel free to "call me out" on that.

17. I didn't mean to upset you
Forgive me if you feel I read your words incorrectly.

I despise when a thread about someone good, such as Gore, is taken off track and turned into someone's misplaced battle that does not belong nor pertain.

I was only attempting to prevent that in this thread. As is evident by your reply to me I failed greatly. Know I am truly and honestly sorry.

Continue as you see fit. I'll not interrupt you again.

30. oh, so anything less than "we're going to hell in a handbasket" is "false optimism"?
Get real.

I'm squared for a fight, and I'm fighting it.

Given your attitude I'm curious to know what you're doing, if anything. I mean, if you think all is lost then surely you're not wasting your time trying to reduce your emissions and convincing others to do the same, right? What would be the point?

33. I google global warming news every day, so I see as much if not more than you....
...and my request to you would be to keep your "hell in a handbasket" talk to yourself.

The seriousness of what's going to happen depending upon different scenarios of human reduction is still being weighed, but suggesting that we're done can only breed apathy, which I would hope you don't subscribe to.

Presumably nothing at all, since with your attitude about it there's no point doing anything, correct?

Apathy is the biggest problem we face, and you take pride in spreading it. Nice job.

Looking forward to it. Getting something going on this vital issue is the most important thing our congress critters should be doing. I've been reading with trepidation about the accelerated melting of the arctic ice cap, then read about the race to claim the north pole for oil drilling, and I just want to scream at all the idiots in charge.

Can't wait to get a copy.

36. When you think about it- considering the disasters about to happen
and the fact that there will still be too many Republicans and sell out Dems to enact legislation to rationally respond them- if they can be mitigated at all, I don't see why Gore would want to be President.

I sure wouldn't. It'd be like banging your head against the wall.
