Thompson takes aim at Clinton

By Steve Holland Thu Sep 6, 12:49 AM ET

DES MOINES (Reuters) - Former Sen. Fred Thompson took aim at Democrat Hillary Clinton on Thursday as he made a long-delayed entry into the Republican presidential race and immediately took good-natured jabs from rivals.
..........

TAKING AIM AT HILLARY CLINTON

........

In his Web video, Thompson directed fire at Clinton, a message seemingly aimed at generating enthusiasm among Republican primary voters who are loathe to see the New York senator win the presidency.

Thompson noted that when he was elected to the U.S. Senate in 1994, it came two years after his party was demoralized by Democrat Bill Clinton's election as president.

"In 1994, our conservative principles led us to a comeback and majority control of the Congress. Now you don't want to have to come back from another Clinton victory. Our country needs us to win next year, and I am ready to lead that effort," Thompson said.

1. memo to Fred: run a poll in New York State in which those surveyed are
asked to choose between yourself and Senator Clinton for the 2008 presidency.

Next, read the results of the survey.

Then, withdraw from the race.

Because you are not going to carry New York, or any other blue state, and you may even lose several red states.

2. Good luck with that, Thom.
Go on attacking the last President and telling Americans they were stupid to elect him.

Don't have a look in here...

http://www.pollingreport.com/clinton1.htm

because it'll be painfully obvious that Bill Clinton still enjoys favorability numbers that Republicans can only dream about.

15. GOP = Grumpy Old Putz.
Carl Bernstein just pointed something out on Olbermann of which freddy would do well to take note. Um... when you start comparing the Clinton presidency with - er - ahem! - what we've got now, uh - well, there's really NO COMPARISON AT ALL. Because what we've had to suffer through, letting the republi-CONS call the shots, has made the Clinton years look mighty good.

Right said, fred. Go ahead. Keep a'talkin'.

6. He said "his party was demoralized by Democrat Bill Clinton's election "
Edited on Thu Sep-06-07 06:36 AM by Maribelle
Demoralized??? The election of Bill Clinton set them on fire.

In truth, back then the republicans thought they would dominate the national scene for decades with their cute widdle Willy-Horton-type hate mongering and it didn't work against Clinton in 1992 - - because Big Daddy Bush was so hated. So, instead of the hate mongering republicans changing their evil ways, they ratcheted up the hate and have propelled it ever since.

This old-century whining over Clinton will not go very far today, for even their 33 percenters grow weary of this tripe. Thompson is past his shelf life by light years.

Edited on Thu Sep-06-07 07:17 AM by still_one
she better come out swinging, and remind him and the country that it was the DEMOCRATS who gave them social security and medicare. It was the Democrats who helped working America have a safe working environment, and helped perserve a woman's right to choose

I would also hope that Hillary points out how Mr. thompson also stood as a spy for the nixon administration, to warn him to destroy evidence, and obstruct justice. Is this the kind of person you wnat?

and please Hillary, point out thompson's record, how he voted against stem cell research, a woman's right to choose, and so many other anti-people issues

16. Skipping The Debate! Skipping The primary! Don"t You need to win nomination FRED?
Just like his reputation.
Just like the reputation of the actor who came before him,.
Just like the well deserved and hard earned (probably the only thing he can say that about) reputation of the present "I'm entitled" brat in chief,

Hard work and earning something seem to be out of the question for this "actor" president to be.

We just had a man "playing " at being president do we really want a man "acting" at being president?

Watch out for the "we need to fix it, we broke it." argument that is coming from the Rethug BRAIN. There is only one problem with this "Crate and Barrel" argument for the republican. Before we can fix anything we need to get the Bull and the Bull%#@&ers out of the shop!

20. but fraud thompson, by the
end of bill's presidency the american people were proud he had been their president and the exit polls when he left office were anywhere from 68 to 72 percent.....and now folks are seeing this president as a failure and no gop candidate will bring this country back to the peace and prosperity it had under bill clintons presidency.....Folks are beginning to see on the dem side of the ticket there is one which can bring back america's standing in the world and more especially at home. That person is Hillary Rodham Clinton...
So let old Fraud Thompson puff out his chest and if he happens to win, hrc will crack some old nuts .....

23. He's doing it right. Personally, even though I would rather see
someone else get the nomination, I think Hillary Clinton deserves this opportunity and I know she is certainly intelligent enough and all that good judgment stuff to be the President of our country. I also know, like beaucoup other people that Hillary will bring out Republican voters that just might have sat this one out. She's also likely to swing some independents towards, oh god I hate to say it, to either Rudy or Fred. Fred has that "Big Daddy" look that Republicans, especially in the south, just love to death. It doesn't matter to them if he isn't smart enough, energetic enough, anything enough. If he looks the part, let's cast him as President!! After all, he can always surround himself with people who might actually know what they're doing. That worked well for * the last six years. :sarcasm:

To be honest, it's one of my two reservations about Hillary as nominee and then Hillary as President. Fred is playing into the the first one, which is every Republican, possible independents and maybe even some Democrats who don't want a woman President will make sure they get to the voting booth. The same sad scare tactic could be used against Obama too. The other reservation I have about Hillary has to do with how she will be after becoming President. Hopefully I am wrong on that one.

Even so, I'm proud we have a female and a person of color in the running. Finally! Hope Fred's fear tactics don't work.
