WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The U.S. government has obtained a copy of a purported new videotape of al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden and is studying it, U.S. officials said on Friday.


"We can confirm that the U.S. government has the video and it is being analyzed," one official said on condition of anonymity.

An Islamist Web site said earlier on Friday it would soon show a new video of bin Laden -- the first in nearly three years -- to mark the sixth anniversary of the September 11 attacks on the United States.

The Web site published a still photograph apparently from the video, which showed bin Laden looking older than in previously available pictures. However, a photo that Western analysts said accompanied the video announcement showed bin Laden's beard black rather than gray as in pictures from recent years.

Al Jazeera television said the footage, produced by al Qaeda's media arm, was likely to be shown within 72 hours.

This tape seems fishy to me in that it is supposed to show Bin Laden criticizing the Democrats for not being able to get the troops out of Iraq and suggesting that people read books by Chomsky and former CIA agent Scheuer. The only problem with this is that for some reason the web sites that were supposedly carrying the tape have been mysteriously shut down. The person interviewed by MSNBC said that he thought Al Quida shut the websites down in that they were trying to see how the tapes leaked to the American government before the tape was supposed to be broadcast. That person went on to say that the American government getting this tape would be seen by Al Quida as a setback. The person also said that the American government mostly likely did not have the capability to shut down those websites.

This seems wrong to me in that if the tape was playing on "islamic websites" than most likely Al Quida posted the video on those websites. In addition, how is it that the American government does not have the capability to shut down a number of websites. It seems very convenient to me. This way Bush and the Republicans can say the Democrats cannot be put into office in that it would embolden Al Quida. While at the same time there is noone who can look at the video tape, translate it, and report that Bin Laden does not mention the Democrats.

Personally I am now in the camp that it is making it worse and they should leave. It could be a disaster but it is already dispelling so many Iraqi's to other countries it would be worth a shot.
