Jeb Bush seeks '04 win for brother
http://www.tallahassee.com/mld/tallahassee/news/local/7628725.htm

Gov. Jeb Bush's pitch for his brother's re-election campaign is brief and to the point.

"It's time to get started," he wrote in an invitation to a regional organizational meeting of Bush-Cheney '04 Inc. in Tallahassee on Thursday. "I want you to know that we're not taking anything for granted."

With 27 electoral votes, Florida is expected to be the pivotal state - again - in deciding who gets the White House next January. And Bush's after-hours job is to have his state firmly in the GOP column early on the evening of Nov. 2, avoiding the 36-day standoff that marked President Bush's 537-vote victory in 2000.

"I think it looks pretty good, in that regard," Bush said in a year-end interview last month with Capitol reporters.

One event that would catapult the high-profile governor into super-surrogate status would be the nomination of retiring Sen. Bob Graham for vice president on the Democratic ticket.

3. I don't think they've been unpurged, have they?
I mean, it's only been four years. These things take time.

6. Things are a little
different now, don't forget we have electronic voting, oops, where did those votes go? Damn it, oh well, they're gone now (tee hee hee)

Oh sorry they were on a hard disk in this machine and well..... they just aren't there now. Oh I'm sorry when we transmitted the data over the PSTN (Public Switched Telephone Network) there must have been some packet loss as well? Sorry! Oh no that data is no longer available. It's lost and gone forever.

Can't you just hear it now? I can.

9. I Don't Think You Can Call For A "State-Wide" Recount In Florida...
...that's why Al Gore didn't do it in 2000. He would have had to request recounts in all 67 counties; and he just didn't have the time to do that.

7. isn't there some sort of conflict-of-interest situation here?
with a governor who's in a position to influence his state's vote? When his brother is the president? etc. etc. etc.???

How can this be legal? Should it be legal?

Does anybody care?

10. Unfortunately, No.
This is really no different than having a member of your own party campaign on your behalf while governor of a state. For example, Marc Racicot (MT), Tommy Thompson (WI) and Tom Ridge (PA) all campaigned heavily for Bush in 2000 while they were governor.

The line should be drawn, not by family tie, but to what length said governor goes to get his boy elected. Giving a stump speech on the candidate's behalf: okay. Illegally purging voter rolls and throwing your weight around for said candidate: not so okay...
