New Fee for Those Getting Child Support
Source: Associated Press

(09-07) 16:24 PDT WASHINGTON (AP) --

Millions of families that turned to federal and state governments for help in collecting child support payments will now have to pay more for the service.

Beginning Oct. 1, families will have to pay $25 annually when states have collected at least $500 on their behalf. Families that previously received public assistance will be exempted.

The $25 will help reduce the federal deficit and compensate the federal government and the states for providing a child support program. Two-thirds of the fee will go the federal government; one-third to the state.

Families also pay a $25 application fee to get a state's help in obtaining child support.

--
Some members of Congress are also considering repealing the $1.6 billion cut. The House Ways and Means Committee scheduled a briefing for Monday to learn from child support officials about how less federal money could affect collections in individual states.

1. Perfect. Punish those too poor to collect child support from their weasel deadbeat ex-husbands.
Just like bushco. Leave every poor child behind.

4. Nice broad brush.
There are plenty of Mothers who don't have their kids and are behind on child support too. I just love this website and all the broad brushes it paints.

9. Okay.
Here are the latest census figures. (2003)

http://www.census.gov/prod/2006pubs/p60-230.pdf

Yes, there are plenty of mothers who are behind on child support.
Plenty, however, is not the overwhelming majority.
How's that brush looking now?

Considering it still ignores the particulars.

21. Dontcha just love
When it's fairly safe to use a fairly broad brush and you get accused of misandry and what about the poor widdle menz!

Love how the abuse statistics and the deadbeat sperm donor statistics, which overwhelmingly indict men, as a class, are called "too broad."

When someone posts about being battered in a relationship and hundreds of DU women share their stories of physical abuse - it was quite shocking just how many DU women have been in abusive relationships. But you must be gender neutral when talking about it.

Well, I refuse. The OVERWHELMING MAJORITY of deadbeat parents are men. The men can protest all they want that women are deadbeats too but it's still not going to change the facts.

25. In this country, mothers are still more likely to get full custody.
And they also get to take care of the children most couples produce outside of marriage.

It's not a "broad brush" if it's true.

17. I am that sex, and every case I've ever seen of deadbeatness has been an ex-husband.

Refering to deadbeat ex-husbands is most certainly NOT an attack on an entire sex. Methinks you doth protest too much.

Look at the stats, btw.

5. Shouldn't the state be billing the collection fees to the deadbeat parent?
When you are sued and lose, typically the loser has to pay the winner's attorneys' fees. It should be the same principle here.

18. Apparently, states had a choice of:
make the custodial parent pay, pay it themselves or make the non-custodial parent pay.

Florida (who would have thought we'd do something right) and W. Virginia have opted to pay the fee themselves (basically, just pay 17.33 to the federal government)

Virgina, who has decided to make the custodial parent pay, said that they couldn't make the non-custodial parent pay because they wouldn't be able to get them to pay that on top of the $6,000 that the average deadbeat parent already owes.

What a crazy law!!! Another example of the poor and working class paying for the perks of the goddamned rich. Keep the capital gains tax cuts, but then force single working parents to pay for the deficit that results.

What the fuck every happened to no taxation without representation???

Which will be used, as always, to destroy the very people who are paying for their own destruction.

the time they plan and create them?

WTF - this is just another regressive TAX - like the Romney wealth transfer program in MA for the health insurance providers.
