Bush to address war-weary Americans on Iraq

By Matt Spetalnick 40 minutes ago

SYDNEY (Reuters) - President George W. Bush will address a war-weary American public next week to "lay out a vision" for the U.S. role in Iraq as he tries to sell his strategy in the wake of a crucial report to Congress.

Heading home from an overseas trip on the eve of a political showdown over the unpopular war, Bush used his Saturday radio address to appeal for patience from Democratic lawmakers demanding a timetable for troop withdrawal.

Bush is under mounting pressure to change course in Iraq as top commander David Petraeus and Ambassador Ryan Crocker prepare to testify about a troop buildup the president says is making progress but which critics call a failure.

"I urge the members of Congress to listen to these two well-respected professionals -- before jumping to any conclusions," he said.

Fresh from a surprise visit to Iraq, Bush announced he would make his case in a televised address after Petraeus and Crocker deliver much-anticipated assessments starting Monday. CNN said the president would speak in prime time on Thursday.

"Next week," he said, "I will speak directly to the nation about the recommendations General Petraeus and Ambassador Crocker have presented to me.

8. it is a shame the democrats in congress don't realize that.

22. As cynical and immoral as it may sound (and is), Dems love keeping the
Iraq War alive, as it only redounds to Repukes disadvantage. Iraq is helping create this century's "Hoover moment," a combination of circumstances combining to condemn Repukes to the political wilderness for an entire generation.

I say it is "cynical and immoral" because the Dems strategy condemns countless Iraqi civilians and innumerable American soldiers to death and catastrophic injury in the 16 months remaining before Jan. 2009.

N.B. * and Reich Wing will not have the last word on Iraq necessarily; I've heard reports that the main umbrella group of the Sunni Iraqi Resistance has announced plans to escalate its own armed resistance. The international tribunal that convened in Istanbul some two years ago determined upon deliberation that armed resistance to the U.S. occupation is fully legitimate and justified by the illegal occupation.

27. As much as I don't like Bush's way of doing things...
The whole idea of insurgents slaughtering women and children with car bombs being considered "fully legitimate" is pretty abhorrent in and of itself.

2. Where will he give it?
Definetley not from the Oval Office. I love him there- deer in the headlights eyes and half drugged. But I imagine it will be from a military base as usual or maybe in front of the Lincoln or Washington memorials since he now equates himself with them.

14. Maybe from Katie Whouric's lap
Since they just happened to hook up during *'s "surprise" visit to Iraq, and Whouric is now a big fan of the war, this would be perfect.

10. The "Cry Wolf" syndrome
Here's the deal. NO ONE IS LISTENING TO YOU SHRUB!

Have you ever dated someone who was a pathelogically liar? I did. This young lady was extremely attractive, smart, had great ambition, etc. But she LIED about stuff all the time. Sometimes it was big lies, sometimes little lies. But she lied constantly which is a mental problem.

So what happened over time (I was an idiot for staying with her for a couple of years) was I just didn't believe anything she said. Yes I should have broken up with her but it was at the time just more convenient not to do so. But when we would be together I just tuned out mostly.

That is what the Amerikan public has done to this pResident. They don't trust him because he has been busted on so many lies. You cannot "sell" something if people know you are a blatant liar.

The last few TV speeches have yielded very low overall audience numbers. It is because people have simply tuned him out.

13. How many freakin' times can they "lay out a vision" for the American public?
I'm so sick and tired of this charade. The only reason he has the balls to get in front of a camera is because he's surrounded by protection--no one can get to him.

Please, please, PLEASE--when will we EVER wake up and stop the madness? I'm not sure how much more we can take.

I WANT MY COUNTRY BACK, DAMMIT!!!

16. Ratings Drop Ahead
It's getting to the point where the more he talks the lower his numbers go. This reminds me of the Social Security debacle where the more he spoke about it, the less support his plan received.

I'm betting they'll be in around 25% by next week...more if he interrupts a popular tv show.

18. "I urge the members of Congress to listen to these two well-respected professionals"
Considering that Petraeus' report (and it's not much of a report at that, just an introduction to a Q&A session, really) isn't even written by Petraeus, listening to them would be rather superfluous, wouldn't it?

Now they will have to sober him up for a couple of days, and pray that he knows what country he is in, and why he is trying to talk.
