Destructive species turns up in Cheney

Biologists discovered adult zebra mussels this week at Cheney Reservoir, a discovery that has boaters, anglers and the Wichita Water Department concerned.

Found in more than a dozen states, zebra mussels are notorious for clogging the intake structures at water and power plants and damaging native fish populations.

"It's not what we wanted to hear, but it's not a total surprise," said Jerry Blain, water department superintendent of production and pumping. "We've already done a study on what our options might be, and none of them are free."

Blain wouldn't speculate if the infestation could lead to higher water rates for Wichitans. Cheney Reservoir, about 20 miles west of Wichita, provides about 70 percent of the city's water.

According to this http://www.recreation.gov/recAreaDetails.do?contractCode=NRSO&recAreaId=124&agencyCode=129 there are boat ramps at Cheney. If some fisherman were to fish one of the Great Lakes, then dump ballast in the reservoir, that would do it.
