Pentagon planning base near Iraq-Iran border - report
Source: Reuters

NEW YORK (Reuters) - The Pentagon is preparing to build a military base near the Iraq-Iran border to try to curtail the flow of advanced Iranian weaponry to Shiite militants across Iraq, the Wall Street Journal reported on Monday in its online edition.

Quoting Maj. Gen. Rick Lynch, the commander of the Army's 3rd Infantry Division, the Journal said the Pentagon also plans to build fortified checkpoints on major highways leading from the Iranian border to Baghdad, and install X-ray machines and explosives-detecting sensors at the only formal border crossing between the two countries.

The base will be located about four miles from the Iranian border and will be used for at least two years, according to the report. U.S. officials told the paper it is unclear whether it will be among the small number of facilities that would remain in Iraq after any future large-scale U.S. withdrawal.

Maj. Toby Logsdon, the U.S. officer overseeing the project, told the Journal that the new outpost will have living quarters for at least 200 soldiers, who could arrive in November. Continued...

The British in the fall of 2006 found NO proof of any flow of Iranian arms or personnel into Iraq.

This is just more beating of the Iranian war drums.

1. Our DOD is like a little country of it own.
They seem to have more money than God and more power than Congress. I wish Congress would get a hold of this spending along with such things as the CIA. Keeping a lid on the WH and their money would be a good thing also. Where are the Conservatives any how?

2. It is a very long border.
The Brits were only in the south, by Basra. They wouldn't know shit about what went on outside their sector.

There's a load of smuggling that has always gone on over the Zagros mountains, up by the adjoining Kurdistans. Those routes go back centuries.

6. I don't know if that is all of it but here is where I just came across this
http://rawstory.com//news/2007/Pentagon_plans_base_along_Iran_border_0910.html

The Pentagon is preparing to build a base near the Iraqi-Iranian border, in an effort to stem the "flow" of "advanced Iranian weaponry" to Shiite militants in Iraq, according to Monday's edition of the Wall Street Journal.

"The push also includes construction of fortified checkpoints on the major highways leading from the Iranian border to Baghdad and the installation of X-ray machines and explosives-detecting sensors at the only formal border crossing between Iran and Iraq," the Journal said.

The move comes amid continuing reports of US plans to strike Iran, and several weeks after a RAW STORY report which signaled that the US had shifted its focus from Iran's alleged nuclear weapons program to its alleged shipment of IEDs across the Iraqi-Iranian border as the principal meme in selling a possible attack.

"Gen. Petraeus is expected to warn that Iran is expanding its attempts to destabilize Iraq by providing Shiite extremists with lethal weaponry such as advanced roadside bombs capable of breaching even the strongest U.S. armor," the Journal says. "U.S. commanders say that Iranian-made weaponry is used in an increasing percentage of attacks on U.S. forces, and that Shiite extremists are now responsible for as many anti-American attacks as Sunni radicals."

Iran denies supplying weapons to Iraqi militants. Intelligence officials have told RAW STORY that some weapons manufactured in Iran -- including explosively formed penetrators, armor-piercing bombs -- are killing American troops in Iraq. Officials caution, however, that there is no evidence these devices are manufactured by the Iranian government or that the government knows of their movement.

The new U.S. base is to be built about four miles from the Iranian border.

The U.S. officer overseeing the project, Maj. Toby Logsdon, "says that the new base will have living quarters for at least 200 soldiers. He hopes U.S. forces will begin living at the new outpost in November."

"Iran will know this is here -- they will have to rethink how they do things, and the smugglers will have to rethink how they do things," he told the Journal.

"The challenge of preventing Shiite militants from smuggling weaponry and explosives across the largely porous Iraqi-Iranian border was apparent on a recent visit to Wasit, a sparsely populated Iraqi province that abuts the long border between the two countries," the paper adds. "There is no fence or wall separating Iran and Iraq, and the border itself is unmarked."

I'm going to direct all DUers to the biggest and most glaring sign that war is being manufactured:

Petraeus has become huge in the media. He has in fact been polled to see if Americans believe he will be straight with the American people. A good amount believe he will stretch or twist the truth so war in Iraq will be continued. But that does not account for what Americans think about Petraeus and Iran. For when he speaks up and shares his report, one can now expect Iran to enter the picture as an important part of the "war on terror". It will officially mark the first step towards getting rid of another member of the so-called "Axis of Evil".

11. Well, like you said, would it matter?
The WH/Pentagon will do whatever it wants and the lapdog Dems outnumber the Patriot Dems to keep accountability out of the picture.

13. Cries
The closer the bases to that border, the more of the short-range missiles (some over-the-shoulder) can reach the stationed soldiers when shit breaks loose. It is a BAD idea.

15. Plus
When Bush attacks Iran, all those little outposts the American military has scattered across Iraq will all turn into mini-Alamo forts that can only be saved with devastating air strikes. Of course only the worst kind of traitor would protest the wholesale destruction of Iraqi cities to save our troops. I'm guessing that the further along preparation get for the Iran war, the more insurgent attacks will decrease as resistance groups head for the hills.
