Cindy Sheehan arrested at Petraeus hearing
By Klaus Marre
September 10, 2007

Anti-war activist Cindy Sheehan was arrested Monday in or near the hearing room where Gen. David Petraeus and U.S. Ambassador to Iraq Ryan Crocker are testifying on the situation in Iraq, according to the U.S. Capitol Police.

Four anti-war protesters were arrested for disorderly conduct. One of them, who was not named, is being taken to George Washington Hospital “due to complaint of injury” and is also charged with assault on a police officer.

According to the information from the Capitol Police, Sheehan and the other three were shouting in a hallway.

Sheehan was the face of the anti-war movement before saying in May of this year that she would “retire” from the cause. Shortly thereafter, she announced that she would seek the congressional seat of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.).

5. This is the kind of thing that will make a change....
if we all stand behind it and be strong with her. One person and one brave action can make a change in a day...but it is the support behind that action that will make the difference.

What if no one stood behind Rosa Parks when she was arrested for not giving up her seat? She would have sat in jail and nothing would have changed.

I, for one, and going to post up this information around my college and rally people around it. Get people together, maybe even start a club based on people who are sick of getting trampled by the big wigs.

Anyone else have any ideas? Remember, every little thing helps.

36. You know, most people forget that Rosa Parks
was an officer in the NAACP...

She was activist long before she refused to leave her seat on the bus... She was part of the movement, another soldier in the struggle.

And it took the entire movement but her arrest and the publicity it brought was also instrumental in whatever tiny progress was made for Civil Rights in this country...just like Code Pink, et. al.

35. The correct statement?
Edited on Tue Sep-11-07 01:30 AM by Moochy
The correct statement is to keep funding the war!

Take more half-steps, Pelosi and Reid, even though neo-liberals in the party are spewing about the NEW WAR, and are using the same "support the troops" lies. Let's just keep validating the neo-con frames, and keep ceding the middle ground by playing "nice".

"Oh No, They are making us look bad! Wrong statement!!! " So concerned over what a non-democrat says and does...a touching show of concern.

Her action got you to get off your ass and pooh pooh her protest.

11. I thought she had retired from these antics
This is my resignation letter as the "face" of the American anti-war movement. This is not my "Checkers" moment, because I will never give up trying to help people in the world who are harmed by the empire of the good old US of A, but I am finished working in, or outside of this system. This system forcefully resists being helped and eats up the people who try to help it. I am getting out before it totally consumes me or anymore people that I love and the rest of my resources.
Good-bye America ... you are not the country that I love and I finally realized no matter how much I sacrifice, I can’t make you be that country unless you want it
... Cindy Sheehan

21. How many of those who are opposed to Sheehan's visit called your reps this week?
There's been a huge push by the wingnuts in the last few days. Commercials were slapped all over the TV and radio asking people to voice their support of the war. And I heard a report on the radio today about "statistics" that indicated most people feel the surge is successful! How many of us called our reps to remind them how we feel? I know, you called them just a couple of weeks ago; but they deal with public opinion on a moment-to-moment basis. They will not personally remember your call...they need continual communication with us.

26. Why was Yearwood cutting in line?
What makes him so special?

Yearwood allegedly refused to move back after jumping in front of a line of about two dozen people waiting to get into the hearing. He was charged with disorderly conduct and assault on a police officer, Capitol Police said.

He can be clearly heard telling the cop that he'd been standing there for as long as anyone else and was just asking the cop why was he being pulled out of the line...

I take his words on the video over any freakin' gestapo tool's lies...

47. Actually he was joining with members of his group already there
A first hand account I received from one of the 7 women there with CODEPINK:

"The Honorable Rev. Yearwood had been in line with us for about
2 hours. Just as we started to go in he was pulled from the line
for "cutting in"

So Police let him stand there for 2 hours then decided he cut the line. Sort of silly really. The 7 who went in had arrived 4 hours early.

40. You seem to be suggesting it's "fun" -- ?? ?? ???
I would think that perhaps right now they are ensuring that Cindy isn't hurt in the arrests as others have been because Cindy is prominent --

However, they are arrested and go thru a process; presumably they see some bars and their freedom is limited.

As most of us can understand, this is also time away from one's family, friends -- and it has been a long march -- at least two years, as I recall, for Cindy.

As much as the right-wing would like to label all political activity as a cry for celebrity -- an easy walk to fame -- I would suggest that the right-wing typically gets things upside down.

44. People here who say Cindy getting arrested "makes us look bad" seem to forget
that Martin Luther King was arrested many times; so was Mahatma Gandhi; so were many, many of their fellow and sister activists. And, though a person arrested in a civil disobedience protest may throw a brave smile at the cameras, being arrested is ALWAYS a scary experience, and often enough, a brutal experience. It may start with being held in a police bus for 12 hours, no food, no water, no toilet, no appeal. Then booking--fingers up your ass and your vagina looking for contraband, mug shot, fingerprinting, sometimes being stripped of clothing, and, if you object, being put in "cold cell." And all this is BEFORE you are even charged with anything. And when you are finally given some food--many hours later--it is inedible, and the tank you are finally thrown into stinks to high heaven. The arrest procedures ARE the punishment. Not to mention getting shoved around, and sometimes beaten, during the arrest, or afterward.

NO ONE---NO ONE!--who undergoes this very scary, humiliating and always potentially brutal experience, for a just cause, should be dismissed as "having fun," or "seeking publicity." Try it yourself, before you ever make such casual, snide, ignorant accusations.

As for "making us look bad," who is "us"? The Diebold II Congressional 'Democrats' who are trying to fool "all of the people, all of the time"?

Sorry. They are not "us." "Us" are the 70% of the American people who hate this war and want it ended. "Us" are the great, peace-minded, justice-minded, progressive American majority that our Democratic leadership has been trying to defeat since October 2002, when they voted for the Iraq War Resolution, and voted in even bigger numbers for the "Help America Vote Act," by which they fast-tracked electronic voting systems all over the country, run on 'TRADE SECRET,' PROPRIETARY programming code, owned and controlled by rightwing Bushite corporations, with virtually no audit/recount controls. They not only DIDN'T warn the voters about this, they wholeheartedly supported it, and continue to do so to this day--and they furthermore forbade talk of election fraud, and have blockaded reform of our fraudulent election SYSTEM.

Our party leadership--that is, our Congressional representatives--could not have disgraced themselves more. In some polls, they rank BELOW El Stupido! And Cindy Sheehan getting arrested is going to make them "look bad"? Or make the rest of "us" Democrats "look bad"?

How screwed up is thinking like that?

Let me make this very clear. In 2004, our political leaders took our money, and took our volunteer labor, and put George Bush in the White House--again! In 2006, they took our money, and took our volunteer labor, and put 30 "Blue Dog" 'Democrats' in Congress, to prevent impeachment and to re-fund and ESCALATE the war. How did they do this? By the 'TRADE SECRET,' PROPRIETARY programming code they had voted to infest our election system with!

It is an illusion, and a deception, that THEY are somehow "us." They have betrayed us--in ways that are really and truly unforgivable.

"Looking bad" is the least of their problems. They ARE bad. Real bad. There is hardly a one of them who can prove he or she was really elected. They themselves were empowered by unverifiable elections.

And, no, I do not condemn every one of them. And, yes, I think some--a few--were genuinely elected, and some are good people. And I think there are some others who are scared, or only partly corrupt (--seeking power, haven't totally sold out yet). I am talking about Congress as a whole, and our political establishment as a whole.

And that is where Diebold/ES&S's "trade secret" vote counting comes in. It shapes the WHOLE. It may permit true representatives of the people to win here and there; but, by tweaking OTHER elections into the rightwing column (R or D, it doesn't matter), in both primary and general elections, it INSURES that NO MAJORITY that reflects the true will of the people will ever gain power again.

Leaders like Pelosi and Reid can then say "we don't have the votes" to impeach, or to stop the war. They are lying. They COULD HAVE HAD the votes if they had insisted on TRANSPARENT vote counting in our election system!

Instead, OUR DEMOCRATIC LEADERSHIP permitted, and encouraged, and fast-tracked COMPLETELY NON-TRANSPARENT vote counting, all over the country, prior to the 2004 election. 'TRADE SECRET' vote counting. Vote counting that no one can see. Vote counting that no one can verify. Vote counting in INSIDER HACKABLE voting systems, with no means of detection. Vote counting in the complete control of private BUSHITE corporations.

Cindy Sheehan puts them to shame, that's true. But it is not Cindy Sheehan getting arrested that makes them "look bad." And I really resent anybody shoving ME--a Democratic voter and supporter for 40 years--into a group called "us" that includes the traitor 'Democrats' in the Diebold II Congress and the DLC who are shoving this war down our throats in the teeth of 70% opposition by the American people.

I only wish that Cindy Sheehan had gotten arrested throwing blood on Diebold/ES&S voting machines. Because that IS the problem.
