WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Do Americans trust the top U.S. military commander in Iraq to report what's really going on without making the situation sound better than it is?

Gen. David Petraeus talks with President Bush when he visited Anbar Province in Iraq last week.

In a CNN/Opinion Research Corporation poll last month, Americans were asked that very question. Fifty-three percent said they did not trust Gen. David Petraeus' report.

A USA Today-Gallup poll asked the public again this month whether they thought Petraeus' report would be independent and objective. Again, 53 percent did not.

2. Poll: Petraeus recommendations tough sell to Americans
This article by Bill Schneider is incredibly misleading! He claims that the Petraeus report is a "tough sell" based on a poll from last month and another completed 1 day BEFORE Petraeus actually gave his report to the Armed Services Committee. The implication, of course, is that this skepticism was in response to the report as delivered yesterday. How sad that CNN's journalism has devolved to such blatant manipulation of the public perception of events. Undoubtedly, there will be a post-report poll that will show a slightly different picture, but even before it is published, it will surely contain one fatal accuracy flaw revealed by the following question: Will the poll reflect the public's response to the actual report because we actually read it, listened to it or watched it, or will it merely reflect our perception based solely on the media reports of it? I suspect that the latter will be the case..and I think that is a sad testimony of a polarized American society that no longer concerns itself with objectivity.
