Walsh wants U.S. troops out of Iraq; no more war funding

This just in:
Just received an email from our Washington reporter, Erin Kelly, who just got off the phone with Rep. Jim Walsh. She's writing a story for tomorrow's paper that reports the moderate Republican is switching gears and is now calling for withdrawal of U.S. troops from Iraq.

Not only that but Walsh, who visited Iraq during the weekend, says he will no longer support funding the war.

GOP Rep. Walsh to call for Iraq withdrawal.

The editorial blog of the Rochester Democrat & Chronicle is reporting that Rep. Jim Walsh (R-NY), a moderate Republican, “is switching gears and is now calling for withdrawal of U.S. troops from Iraq.” Additionally, “Walsh, who visited Iraq during the weekend, says he will no longer support funding the war.” The paper’s Washington correspondent, Erin Kelly, will have full report tomorrow.

2. Good to hear, but it's the vote that counts
Not some bloviating statement in a press conference, or on Meet the Press. We'll see.

3. Tomorrow, I'm calling that guy and saying THANK YOU.
Just like that Republican Walter Jones deserves a thank-you. He's the ONE GOPer with the integrity to start looking at this realistically and without spin, and discovering he just couldn't stand behind it anymore. And before the Dems "took control of Congress," he'd crossed the aisle on this, and I believe he was the sole Republican to come to those basement hearings when the Dems couldn't get a pot to piss in from the republi-CON leadership. And it looks as though Walter Jones still has a well-developed conscience. He should get our thanks and applause.

5. Kerry said we should pressure Republicans
That's what we should be doing instead of wasting time with betray us ads and disrupting hearings. We should be organizing telephone trees and demonstrations to the moderate Repubs.

7. Walsh is feeling the heat
He almost got defeated in 2006. His opponent is already campaigning and raising money. I have a sneaking suspicion that Walsh is serving his last term.

8. That opponent would be Dan Maffei
Young, intelligent, compassionate. He will definitely give Mr. Walsh another run for his money.
