Vandalism at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial?
September 11, 2007 - 11:30am
Hank Silverberg, WTOP Radio

WASHINGTON - U.S. Park Police are investigating a possible case of vandalism at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial on the National Mall.

National Park Service rangers noticed what they call a light, oily substance on the memorial's wall panels and paving stones on Saturday. The substance was spread over an area of 50 to 60 feet.

U.S. Park Police are still investigating what the substance is, and if it was left on purpose.

"We have not reached a conclusion as it whether this was intentional or whether it is accidental. It is simply too premature to say," National Park Service spokesman Bill Line says.

Preservation staff are working to remove the substance and say they believe they can do so without causing any permanent damage.

13. Wouldn't that be ironic.
Agent Orange a few tweaks, put it in a bottle and call it Round-Up.

And then advertise it on my own damned teevee.

6. That's my thought, too
It's not the first time, either. Damn, I forget the details, but my pea brain says it might have been part of that Astroturf™ movement, 'Move America Forward', or one of their spin-off crap fake outfits like 'Gathering of Eagles', 'Rolling Thunder', 'Vets for Victory', or whatever.

7. Agreed
I was checking out Freeperland, the other night, just to see what they are up to. That is where I first heard about this. Some Freeper was complaining because they had "discovered" the damage and the Park Service Rangers were not taking them seriously that it must be the peace protesters doing. Supposedly, he/she had reported it to the Rangers on three seperate occasions over the past weekend.

I certainly wouldn't put anything past these folks; even something this low. The fact that he/she was barking so loud just made me suspect that he/she was the source. What's the old phrase; "Dog smells his own hole first"?

According to the Freeper post, the Rangers thought it was accidental, which really pissed him/her off.

8. I do not condone such vandalism, but believe the Vietnamese should be memorialized too.
Millions of Vietnamese died in the US-instigated war, and tens of thousands of US citizens. Shouldn't there be some solemn recognition of the lives snuffed out by US bombs and bullets? It's a debt the US cannot possibly repay, but it would be a start.

12. There are such sites in Vietnam
What they call The American War.

Personally, I see no good reason for a permanent installation here. It would make some folks go right over a very thin edge.

9. Let me guess - it's from anti-war hippies spitting on it
You know - just like they did on troops returning from Vietnam.

Or did they?

10. Theres no credible evidence of that ever happening.
The stuff on The Wall is apparently real, as evidenced by the picture.

14. maybe they should figure out what the "Oily substance" is before they actually make a news story out
it? Why are they even floating that it's vandalism when they don't even know what it is?

18. A freeper on one my boards was going ape
about how this is not being headlined in the "MSM". He even posted a link to a FR thread (Now I know where he gets this crap).

Maybe they're waiting to find out from the Park Service what it is. Idiots.
