Hit and Myth: Poll Shows 1 in 3 Americans Still Believe Saddam Involved in 9/11
Source: Editor & Publisher

Six years after the 9/11 terror attacks on the U.S., it seems the media still have some educational work to do. A new CBS/New York Times poll reveals that even today, 1 in 3 Americans believe that "Saddam Hussein was personally involved in the September 11th, 2001, terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon."

This notion was thoroughly debunked by official sources, including those in the White House, years ago, but the myth endures. Polls have shown that belief in this untruth was a prime component in support for the attack on Iraq.

Four in 10 Republicans still hold this view, compared with 32% of Independents and 27% of Democrats.

The poll of 1,035 adults was taken Sept. 4 to 8.

28. doesnt matter all that much now
the administration got away with what it needed to get away with: invading Iraq, overthrowing the ruler, and ensuring a US-friendly regime will somehow emerge

2. Head shaking
I'm not sure there is enough tin foil hats to fit all the ones who think that Saddam was personally involved as well as those that think Bush and the CIA were involved.

22. and if Democrats were telling it like it is about the illegitimate junta's
unconstitutional acts, its' lies, its' violations of international law, its' grab for Iraq's oil - how many of them are speaking against the "oil law" the Corporate shills are demanding of the Iraqis? - then maybe fewer would be willing to swallow ALL the swill put out by the mal-administration.

14. Yes there is.
It's called Apathy, Self-Absorption, Self-Delusion, Willful Ignorance, and the desperate need to do anything to avoid having to face even the remotest uncomfortable Truth.

33. Hmmm. Could it be mainstreaming curricula ...
... to focus on rote memorization so that students' growth may be "measured" by standardized tests rather than promoting the development of critical thinking, problem-solving and communication skills? And then attacking those schools, teachers and administrators who point out that standardized tests lead to standardized minds? And then defunding those schools or otherwise attacking them financially?

And then cutting all sorts of college aid programs, thus making it far more difficult for students to even consider pursing a higher education (for whatever reason one wants - whether out of necessity for employment or love of learning) without looking at a mortgaged future and a still the possibility of being stuck in a series of unstable jobs?

Could it be a real effort to dumb down a large segment of the population, keep them scared and unstable, so that they don't question authority?

Nah ... nobody would try that.

Impressive. That's about the same percentage of Congressmen and Senators who consistently enable or vote with the far right.

27. There's your support for the war.
If the anti-war crowd and 9/11 truthers targeted "Saddam did NOT do 9/11" messages at the Repub base/freepers then the support would dry up. A poll I saw back in '04 showed that 85% of American troops in Iraq believed this meme.

30. It shows how recruiters go after
Mostly ignorant rustics-- who enjoy believing "gangster" Cheney's fairy tales

I know I saw this when "the troops" ate up Johnson's lies 40 years ago---- look to Project 100,000 to get your answer (for those who want a link and won't do their own research)

Bush: "I'm just not all that concerned about Saddam." That is the only thing that will give the 30% permission to re-enter the real world.
