Heavy Police Presence Elicits Significant Criticism
(Sept. 12, 2007) Chileans gathered Tuesday to remember the thirty-fourth anniversary of the military coup that removed President Salvador Allende from office. President Bachelet and thousands of Chileans paid homage to the fallen leader in ceremonies around La Moneda presidential palace, while smaller ceremonies were held to remember former dictator Augusto Pinochet.
Bachelet also held a private ceremony inside La Moneda to remember Allende, one of the first democratically elected Socialist presidents in history. She was joined by the ex-President's daughter and granddaughter in a solemn ceremony with other government ministers.
Bachelet called on the nation to remember Allende and those who fell during the coup by implementing their ideals into Chilean society.
"Nowadays, the best tribute than we pay to Allende and all those that were killed fighting for democracy and their country it is to construct a society and a country that guarantees opportunities, guarantees rights, and guarantees a commitment to democracy in each one of our compatriots,” said President Bachelet ...
