Schwarzenegger Vetoes Iraq Pullout Vote
Source: Associated Press

Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger announced early Wednesday he had vetoed legislation that would have allowed Californians to vote on an advisory measure calling for President Bush to immediately withdraw U.S. troops from Iraq.

The Republican governor said in a statement that a proposed ballot measure on the war would further divide Californians as they go to the polls in the Feb. 5 presidential primary.

"There is no louder message Californians can send to Washington on the Iraq war than who should lead our nation," Schwarzenegger said. "Placing a nonbinding resolution on Iraq on the same ballot, when it carries no weight or authority, would only further divide voters and shift attention from other critical issues that must be addressed."

Schwarzenegger had until midnight Tuesday to sign or veto the bill, which would have put the withdrawal question on California's Feb. 5 ballot.

1. What are the chances the Assembly and Senate will override?
Wouldn't that be a stake through the Governator's heart?

10. Zero.
It will not be overriden. However, signatures can be gathered to place it on the November 2008 ballot, which is where I think it belongs.

22. BS: The Decider Decides.

To further cut down on hurtful divisions of Americans (at least of the California variety) Guv has also ordered all non-republican candidates stricken; after which he will also have their names removed from the ballot.

to do with the large defense industry presence in California? I also wonder how many soldiers and their families based in California have suffered the ultimate consequences of this war.

8. Oh, come on!
Arnold wastes MILLIONS of dollars to put parental notification laws on the ballot not once, but TWICE, but THIS he vetoes???

I think that in this case "further divide" means "prove they'll never vote for my ass again".

Are we supposed to believe he wouldn't have vetoed a similar binding resolution?

Governor rejects legislation calling for an advisory vote on withdrawal of U.S. troops.

Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger vetoed legislation late Tuesday to ask California voters in an advisory ballot measure if they want to withdraw United States troops from Iraq.

The Democratic-backed bill put the Republican governor in a political bind because a majority of California voters support a withdrawal of some or all troops, but Schwarzenegger has hedged his own answers on the issue and his Republican base opposes withdrawal from Iraq.

"The decision to engage in or withdraw troops from war is a federal issue, not a state issue," Schwarzenegger said in a statement. "Placing a non-binding resolution on Iraq on the (presidential primary) ballot, when it carries no weight or authority, would only further divide voters and shift attention from other critical issues that must be addressed."

14. But he is allowing the GOP to place an initative to divide up California's electoral
votes by district, so that approx one third of our electoral votes would go to the republican presidential candidate next year.

18. Schwarzenegger rejects California vote on Iraq war
Source: Reuters

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger vetoed a bill on Wednesday creating a ballot vote on whether state residents favor an immediate withdrawal of U.S. troops from Iraq.

The vote in California, where polls have shown most residents support withdrawing some or all troops from Iraq, would have been only symbolic and not directly impacted the contribution by the country's most populous state to the war.
