Republican senators in tough re-election contests expressed a range of reactions Tuesday to Gen. David H. Petraeus’ report to Congress.
............
Sen. Norm Coleman, R-Minn., who had not previously endorsed withdrawal deadlines, said he would like to hear the administration propose a firm timetable.
Coleman called Petraeus’ testimony and plan “fabulous” but added that he wanted a more specific timeline, perhaps cutting troop levels in half over three years, attached to the goals Petraeus outlined. “Tell the American public that there is a light at the end of the tunnel,” Coleman said. “Here’s when we’re going to get there.”
Coleman is the only senator whose race next year is rated by CQPolitics.com as a tossup. Three other GOP incumbents are in races that Congressional Quarterly rates as “leans Republican”: Susan Collins of Maine, John E. Sununu of New Hampshire and Gordon H. Smith of Oregon.
