WaPo article
HE'S IN. He's just not ready to tell us that yet.

That's the word that's been swirling about Mark Warner's U.S. Senate plans. The former Virginia governor is expected to announce on Thursday that he's making a run for the seat being vacated by another Warner, John Warner. The Virginian-Pilot reports that Mark Warner has been busy behind the scenes preparing for the race:

If the announcement comes as expected, it'll also be delivered via the Internet. If it doesn't, look for shocked Democrats — Warner's the party's top Senate prospect.

As for the Republicans, the two top-mentioned potential candidates, Rep. Tom Davis of Fairfax County and former Gov. Jim Gilmore, have both said they will wait until after the Virginia legislative elections in November to make an announcement.

1. Daily Press (Va. peninsula article) Thursday morning email expected
Former Gov. Mark Warner will inform his supporters by e-mail on Thursday about his decision to seek office.

Warner, a Democrat, is widely expected to announce that he will seek the U.S. Senate seat that will be left open next year by the recently announced retirement of five-term incumbent Republican John Warner, who is no relation to the former governor.

Monica Dixon, who heads Warner's Forward Together political action committee, said the e-mail should go out to his supporters late Thursday morning.

If he does not choose to run for the U.S. Senate seat, Warner could also opt to run for a second term as governor in 2009.

2. Yay, Warner will win!
Gotta say I'm proud of Virginia Democrats for doing what they have to turn this red state blue.

3. He'll win. I'm glad.
He'll be a somewhat reliable right-of-center Democrat. I disagree with much of his politics, but I'd rather him than a Republican.

5. Who is advising Gilmore?
and what are they inhaling?

Gilmore may be the darling of the wackjob right in this state but to everyone else he is a one-trick pony whose one-trick had to be fixed by Mark Warner

8. The only downside to this...
is that this will open-up the Governor's mansion to a republican as rumor was if Mark didn't run for Senate he would run for Governor again after Kain's term is up.

10. That is true
I'm not sure who Democrats have in the on-deck circle for 2009. With the legislature solidly Republican, a GOP victory in 2009 in the governor's race would give Republicans full control of redistricting.
