Citizens offer new take on news
Source: British Broadcasting Corporation

A news agenda formulated by citizens would be radically different from that put together by journalists.

That is the conclusion of a US study which compared what made the headlines in the mainstream media with that of three diverse user-driven news sources.

The study - conducted by a wing of the US Pew Research centre - compared stories over seven days.

Its results will make interesting reading for news editors as well as the new breed of citizen journalists.

I've seen nothing in the US media about this research. Fancy that. :eyes:

3. unfortunately, if you read the article it says readers were more interested in
news about the iphone than the Iraq War.... They should have included DU and huffington post in the research!

4. Someone who reads the linked article
:hi:

I was going to dig down and include that paragraph but decided not to.

This is why the Democratic Party feels it is safe to piss off the activist base: a majority of Americans really do not care about the war. As long as there are iPhones and celebrities having embarassing moments, potential voters simply do not give a rat's tail about what Congress is up to. Mind you, this is a sample of Americans with enough tech savvy to pull together their own news sources from the web and so, very likely, mostly blue staters with money and at least some education.

Sad, it is. Very sad.

5. It is sad...
and the problem is that the younger generation isn't paying attention to politics. We are becoming a country that won't care about the government...and when people stop caring that is when we are in serious trouble. I see it all the time at college. I will be busy reading and while people are talking about the newest celebrity bullshit and the newest tech gadget I try and tell them what is going on in the government and world news.

They don't seem to care and the few that actually listen all say "well, all of the government officials are corrupt." To which I tell them that if that is true then try and do something about it. We should not be intimidated by our government, we should be the ones putting the government in it's place. That is what our country is all about. This is a place where we can have an opinion and where we can do something to make changes in our government without destroying anything...and we need to keep teaching people who don't care about politics that politics effect their lives, unlike which hollywood floozy is back in rehab.

6. "The younger generation isn't paying attention to politics"
There are exceptions, of course, but by and large I think you are correct. Which begs the question: Other than condescending (and thus largely ineffectual) marketing campaigns, what is being done to get people interested in paying attention?

7. Well....
As a college student I do everything I can to keep my friends and people I meet informed. I engage people in political discussions and tell them whether they care or not about what is going on and they listen...or they pretend to at least.

I am a Resident Assistant as well, so I try and post up political information as often as possible, try and get people to see and hear what is going on in the world outside of our campus. It is things like this that will draw people and make people more aware. I am also looking into starting a club based off of politics.

It is the charge of the younger generations to help get others their age involved and parents to help get their children involved.

8. Your efforts are much appreciated, thank you
I've seen a number of mass-market media campaigns in the last dozen years, all of which were thought up and implemented by suits on Madison Avenue and all of which came off (to me) as pretty condescending. I think you have the correct approach. :toast:

9. It is...
vote or die?

Rock the vote?

Ok...rock the vote wasn't so bad but it is the world just trying to force something on the youth. That NEVER works. The best thing to do is make them aware of what is really going on around them. Let them know what is happening and just gently reminding them that they can make a difference if they feel like things are unfair. Remind them that our country is supposed to represent what we want and that through protest and voting we can at least try to make a difference.

Most importantly, that we need to teach others about politics and get more people involved because the most important part of making a change happen is getting more people involved.
