Senate Panel Cuts Funding For European Missile Defense Plans
Source: Associated Press

A Senate panel voted Wednesday to reduce the money requested for a planned U.S. missile defense system in Europe, making it more likely that construction on the project will be delayed.

The panel cut at least $85 million (€61 million) from a request by the White House for the European system. The full House of Representatives also cut $85 million (€61 million) with an additional cut of $54 million (€39 million) from a separate part of the funding. It was not immediately clear whether the Senate added a similar additional cut.

The Senate panel's bill must still be approved by the full Senate and reconciled with the House version before going to President George W. Bush for final disposition.

If the current Senate version is approved, it would affect the building of a project that would include silos for 10 interceptors in Poland and a radar system in the Czech Republic. The plan has roiled relations with Russia, which has suggested that the system could undermine its nuclear deterrent.

3. This is good news
But let's take a dose of reality before we celebrate. Wasn't this also done for funding for Iraq, and when Bush did his veto thing, he got what he wanted.

While this is definitely good news, it ain't over yet! Let's see if the Dems can follow through with this first.

I don't mean to burst anyone's bubble, but we've been through this before and each time we've been disappointed.
