* Says Nawaz deportation a legal matter and Pakistanis should decide it
ISLAMABAD: US Deputy Secretary of State John Negroponte offered broad support on Wednesday for President Gen Pervez Musharraf as Washington’s key ally faces mounting opposition and Al Qaeda-linked violence, AFP reported.
“We welcome Pakistan’s leadership as a voice of moderation and reason in the Islamic world. Your nation remains a valuable ally in the war on terror,” Negroponte, who arrived on Wednesday from Kabul for a one-day strategic dialogue between the US and Pakistan, told a press conference.
Sajjad Malik adds: Negroponte said former prime minister Nawaz Sharif’s deportation was a “legal matter” and the people of Pakistan should decide it. Negroponte said: “It (Nawaz’s deportation) is a legal matter but whatever is done should be done in a peaceful manner so that a peaceful evolution continues in Pakistan.” He said that the issue had not been discussed in the strategic dialogue meeting between the representatives of the two countries at the Foreign Office.
