Italians asked to boycott pasta
Source: Al Jazeera

Italians have taken part in a one-day pasta boycott in protest at a rise in the price of their favourite dish sparked by a global crisis in wheat prices.

The cost of wheat has risen by almost 50 per cent in the past year, as droughts in Australia and Canada cut production, pushing global stockpiles towards a 26-year low.

Consumer groups say the price rises are due to middlemen, while farmers' earnings stay the same, activists said at protests in Rome, Milan and Palermo.
...
Increasing demand from Egypt to India and weather damage to global crops have driven up prices in by about 80 per cent this year in the US.

Yes. Indeed I had gnocchi at lunch...(they're made of potatoes, which is still available at cheap price...)

Well the report doesn't mention that primary food is getting more expensive, and fuel is, and car insurances are, and bank/post accounts are, and local taxes are...

The Consumer Associations organized that. It worked (?).

1. I had not planned to eat pasta today
However a further boycott would not stand in our household. We truly enjoy pasta in all its forms and toppings. And yes, My Friend, you are right. Pasta isn't the only commodity which has gotten more expensive. What next? A boycott of toothpaste?

9. It's a boycott on *buying* pasta
Telling us italians to not eat pasta is like telling the tide to not rise. Good luck with that!

14. For real!
Anyone (not just Italians) who has no pasta in their cupboards is like biscuits without gravy to us southerners! I doubt the boycott will last long.

15. Oh, it's just a one-day event
The action's intent is to draw attention to the rising price of a staple food, and to point out the number of intermediaries between the consumer and the farmer. If we're discussing it, then it has worked!

16. I load up at Big Lots when they have a bunch of imported Italian pasta....
Edited on Thu Sep-13-07 03:41 PM by Gloria
since it's cheaper than the grocery stores! (and even Walfart).

I mean, about 12 lbs at a time...We eat pasta twice a week plus the assorted cup put into lentils, etc.

It's one part of my 100% Italian heritage that I believe in keeping up!!! LOL!!

19. Hi, demoleft! What is the pasta specialty in Abruzzo?
My guess would be either tagliatella or linguine.

I can't imagine wonderful, beautiful Italy without pasta, even if it is only a day!
