Thompson gives no opinion on Schiavo

By BRENDAN FARRINGTON, Associated Press Writer 4 minutes ago

THE VILLAGES, Fla. - Republican presidential candidate Fred Thompson gave no opinion Thursday when asked about efforts by President Bush and Congress to keep Terri Schiavo alive, saying he does not remember details of the right-to-die case that stirred national debate.

Thompson was asked in an interview for Bay News 9's "Political Connections" program whether he thought Congress' intervention to save the life of the brain-damaged woman two years ago was appropriate.

"I can't pass judgment on it. I know that good people were doing what they thought was best," Thompson said. "That's going back in history. I don't remember the details of it."

Congress passed a bill after Schiavo's feeding tube was removed in March 2005 to allow a federal court to review the case, and Bush returned from his Texas ranch to sign the bill into law. But a federal judge refused to order the tube reinserted, a decision upheld by a federal appeals court and the Supreme Court.

1. Fred will run the same campaign that Smirk ran
commit to nothing, opine on nothing, say nothing, just let the media destroy the Dem candidate and then run a "I'm not him/her" campaign.

25. He is proving himself to be another Reagan
Remember - Reagan wasn't the sharpest knife in the drawer either. The media created this folksy, grandfatherly demeanor for him, and he milked it for all it was worth.

Schiavo Case Core of Law and Order Episode?
Could the right-to-life case of Terri Schindler-Schiavo case be the catalyst for a TV show this week?

A disabled woman's family, her husband, the clergy, and the mainstream media are the players.

Considering the program previews, it's certain that the show will be the topic of many a discussion around office water coolers and on Internet message boards on Thursday.

about Thompson as well. Don't think this campaign's going anywhere...it's the equivalent of a flight to DeeCee grounded for 7 hrs on the tarmac. Time for the base to get off the plane and go home disgruntled.

10. How is this possible, unless one watches cartoons and Weather Channel all day?
How can one have avoided forming an opinion on the big watercooler topic of its time, the reason they called a fucking special session in the Senate--his old stomping grounds? Is it that he doesn't want to STATE his opinion, because it will be unpopular with the fundie set, or is he truly old and forgetful? He can't seem to fucking remember what he thought yesterday or last week. Poor old coot. Somebody give him gingko and send him to bed early.

15. Yes, they're lining up behind a guy who says he can't bother to show up for
church whenever he's up in Virginia--which is most of the time, because he lives there. Imagine if the Dem candidate says he/she almost never goes to church...pretty soon you'd see ads funded by Focus on the Family with Hillary or Obama morphing into the devil, with little horns.

18. They always say some variation on "that's going back in history"
when you ask them about crazy-ass, manifestly stupid, illegal or otherwise typical Republican base shit. Criminal mistakes (never mind lies) leading up to the war? "That's ancient history." Katrina? "Old news." Egregious sexual scandal? "Digging up skeletons to score base political points." Such a lame response, but the best they've got, I guess.

This Fred Thomas is not Presidential material.

19. Gee Fred, it was in all the papers
And just two and a half years later, you don't remember any of the details? Well, let me refresh your aging memory: Brain-dead woman on a ventilator for years. Her husband wanted her care terminated, her parents insisted that she was going to come out of an irreversible coma, oh, just any second now. Dr. Bill Frist, then Senate Majority Leader (now just a fading painful memory himself) issued his own misdiagnosis based on extensive review of some 20 seconds of carefully edited videotape. Heck, it was such an important issue that Dubya hisself cut short one of his vacations to sign the bill that meddled in the Schiavos' private, personal affair.

So whaddya think, Fred? Is the mechanism and our system of government made to interfere and micromanage every little instance, as long as it can be demagogued in your favor?

Fuckhead.

29. I don't believe a single Republican has fogotten the details of that case.
It was the beginning of the end of Bush's tenuous grasp on a majority-approval rating from Americans.

It started sinking then, and it's never come back since.

And don't think for a minute that any Republican doesn't know this.

30. You're right; they haven't forgotten at all
But they sure as the world would like US to forget it. "Terri Who?" to be enshrined right next to Dubya's "Ahmed Who?" when Chalabi fell out of favor just months after being an invited guest at the State of the Whatever speech, sitting right behind Pickles.
