Gingrich: Republicans need 'clean break' from Bush
Source: Reuters

WASHINGTON, Sept 14 (Reuters) - Republican presidential candidates need to make a "clean break" from President George W. Bush and the U.S. government or they will lose in November 2008, a veteran Republican leader said on Friday.

"If you don't represent real change, you just gave away the 2008 election," said former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, who led the Republican takeover of the House of Representatives in 1994 and now is flirting with a White House run.

Gingrich cited the Iraq war, the failed federal response to Hurricane Katrina two years ago and the inability to control U.S. borders and illegal immigration as evidence of a need for a complete overhaul of the U.S. system of governing.

"Now that may or may not make the White House happy. But I think that's the whole point about making a clean break," Gingrich told a group of reporters over breakfast.

3. Never happen
We wil make damn sure no one forgets the Rubber Stamp Republican Congress.

They hid behind Bush for 8 years but without him they are naked and exposed - and in great danger of losing their jobs. Couldn't happen to a more deserving bunch of lying scumbags.

31. Albatross, thy name is george w. bush.
If the shoe fits, newty.

Which means it's our job to LAMINATE bush to ALL THINGS GOP. Think of how they did it with bin Laden's face almost literally epoxied to Max Cleland, and Willie Horton duct-taped to Michael Dukakis. THAT'S the kind of treatment we should give THEM from NOW ON. bush will be the gift that keeps on giving for MANY campaign seasons to come. Remember the "bush Years!"

10. A complete overhaul of the U.S. system?
But, but, but Newtie! Isn't this exactly what you've been telling us for the last 20 years? That government doesn't work? Or did you neglect to mention that government run by the Republicans is what doesn't work? It's definitely time to try something besides a government by the kleptocracy.

There's too much equating political service with military service as it is.

26. sounds good to me.
and welcome to DU.

-- yeah, as was said above, these repukes in office now are the butt-ugly babies of Newt-ism. The power of the religious right comes from Reagan playing the southern strategy. the Repukes had control of three brances of the govt, and what happens? The economy goes into the shitter, our govt cannot help to restore one of our GREAT cities after a hurricane, the exec. branch lied to pull us into a war that is a total clusterfuck... people in this country are more divided than I can ever remember, and the division has a lot of hatred from both sides fueling it.

our standing in the world is a joke. the perception of american power has diminished...

hey, looks like you Repukes really know how to govern! :eyes:

19. Also from: Craig, Vitter, Abramoff, Foley, Delay, Gonzales, Gannon/Guckert and
Gingrinch!

Gingrich was first accused of unethical behavior when he accepted an advance as part of a book deal as well as numerous other counts. Eighty-four ethics charges were filed against Speaker Gingrich during his term, including claiming tax-exempt status for a college course run for political purposes and using the GOPAC political action committee as a slush fund; see Joseph Gaylord. Gingrich retained former U.S. Representative Edwin Bethune of Arkansas, a Washington, D.C., lawyer and lobbyist, to represent him.

Following an investigation by the House Ethics Committee, Gingrich admitted that he had violated House rules and accepted the house committee's recommendation for punishment.<23><24> Gingrich was sanctioned for $300,000<25> after the House Ethics Committee concluded that his use of tax-deductible money for political purposes and inaccurate information supplied to investigators represented "intentional or . . . reckless" disregard of House rules.<26> Special Counsel James M. Cole concluded that Gingrich violated federal tax law and had lied to the ethics panel in an effort to force the committee to dismiss the complaint against him.

29. I would actually puts Newt's view of the situation there to the right
of Bush and Cheney. If Newt was at the helm they wouldn't have even set up shop in Iraq, they would have just gone directly to Iran and Syria after Iraq without pause. Heck with Newt they may have just used nukes on Iraq, Syria and Iran and not even had troops there. They would have just killed everyone and brought in the oil companies.
