QUANTICO, United States (AFP) - US President George W. Bush on Friday urged the US Congress to embrace his Iraq war strategy and in particular not to heed a public outcry for a full US withdrawal from the war-torn country.

"We've got security in the right direction and we are bringing our troops home," said Bush, who announced on Thursday that he had accepted advice from the US commander in Iraq, General David Petraeus, for a gradual draw-down.
...........
"I call upon the United States Congress: Listen very carefully to what General Petraeus and Ambassador Crocker reported, and support the troop levels that these two men think are necessary to achieve our objective," said Bush.

"I also expect the Congress to support our men and women in uniform and their families and those who have worn the uniform," he said, an apparent reference to calls by some Democrats to end funding for the unpopular war.

2. "We are bringing our troops home"...in meaningless dribs and drabs
over years. And then, of course, the holding hostage of the troops for money--"you better fund them, Congress, or I'll take these here canteens right out of their hands!" How charming. Business as usual.

4. Get the numbers right...
From the time that Bush's team decided to try war "on the cheap", they haven't gotten the numbers right once. The number in the plan on the shelf by the best Army planners was 500,000. Colin Powell clearly warned Bush and Franks of the dangers of trying to do it with less.

100,000 is too few. 130,000 is too few. The surge is bullshit, nothing more than smoke and mirrors for the purpose of delaying the pullout until it is more politically expedient. Delay the consequences of the mistake until it can be blamed on the Democrats.

Either put the 500,000 in (and draft the needed soldiers to do it), or pull them all out. Leaving less than the required is stupid.

Why won't they call for a draft, and do the damn thing right? Because they'd be thrown out of office in a heartbeat.

6. Welcome ScooterFibby!
:hi:

You are right about the correct number initially being way too low, the Generals who called for an initial force of over 200k were summarily laughed out of the military by Rummy.
But I think that NOW it is just too late to try to add more troops to fix this mess. The troops have done all they can, it is time to "surge" the diplomats perhaps, but bring our troops home.
And you are absolutely correct about why they won't call for a draft. Reminds me of the old 1960's ditty - something about sending the generals into combat alone to fight their own wars... This time I'ld like to see Rummy, Cheney, and Bush get to go into combat instead of our troops.
