Dole recalls bagged salads due to E. coli
Source: Reuters

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - A division of Dole Food Co said on Monday it was recalling some bagged salads sold in the United States and Canada because a sample at a Canadian grocery store was found to contain E. coli.

Dole Fresh Vegetables said it has not received any reports that anyone has become sick from eating the products. The recall covers "Dole Hearts Delight" salads sold with a "best if used by" date of September 19.

In recent months, Dole has stepped up its testing and tracking of produce to prevent outbreaks of E. coli such as the one linked to bagged spinach last year that sickened hundreds and killed three.

31. I also thought Bob Dole was the talking point and I was gonna say
to let his ugly wife, Elizabeth, test the Fresh Vegetables for E. coli she's as worthless as tits on a bull in the senate.

2. Again with the bagged salads.

Lazy, lazy lazy! And I'm no foodie here. Make your own salad if you must, or just munch on a tomato or pepper or carrot if you don't want to go to that trouble. But jeez, "bagged salads" -- of course they give you e-coli. Just like "crocs" can get you killed on the elevator. It's called "cultural karma." (Bagged salads have the extra added strike against them of being another great example of our "pay extra for no good reason" Way We Live Now.)

10. I didn't get involved in the bagged salad flame wars of earlier this year -
so I felt maybe this was my turn, and why not jump in early?

9. Not everybody has the time to make their own
That's not laziness. Just because some people buy bagged salad doesn't mean they deserve to get sick.

18. Actually, if bagged salad is on sale it's much cheaper than making it yourself
I don't know where you shop but buying all the ingredients for salad is expensive.

24. Plus, how does it save money
to buy all the raw ingredients, if you're not going to use them up within a couple of days? Bagged salad means I get to spend my kitchen time on the main dish, and side dishes, while still serving my lady and myself a healthy meal. If you're fixing salads for a sizable group of people (4 or more), by all means, get the raw ingredients, and spend the time chopping them up, you will save money. But food that goes bad in the refrigerator is not savings.

33. Hmm, perhaps I should!
I just moved to NY from the Northwest, where we have really great coffee, beer, and wine, but the restaurants tend to be on the "chain" side, so it is an advantage to learn how to cook! Of course, the restaurants here on the East Coast are wonderful, so my lady and I balance out between eating out once a week, and my cooking the rest of the week. Your husband might want to know that women consider it a major turn-on for their man to cook for them, and do the dishes too!

11. If You Don't Buy The Bagged Variety Are You Still Safe?
How many restaurants use huge quantities of precut greens? What about hospitals? How long has bagged greens been available anyhow? Why is it just in the past several years that these recalls have become second nature??????

I was wondering about the salad I had for lunch at a restaurant yesterday.

It was spring greens, I bet it was bagged.

21. I don't believe that
We grow most of our own vegetables, always fertilized with composted horse manure from our own horses. Have never had a problem with that. Of course, you have to WASH the stuff.........

I'm wondering how much of the bagged salad/veges phenomenon could be avoided if people just went ahead and washed it, even though it says "pre-washed".

16. Even 'chopping your own' won't alway protect you from E. Coli if the water supply
used to irrigate the crop was contaminated.

The 'bug' can be systemic in which no amount of washing will cleanse the product.

Cooking would be the only option and when it comes to lettuce, I've yet to find a way to 'cook it' that was pleasingly edible.

I haven't purchased bagged salads or spinach since the last recall. With this new recall, all it tells me is that none of this shit (literally) is safe.

as contaminated food from Capitalist America.

It'd be a nice balance to all the recalls CNN reports from Communist China.

28. Soak lettuce leaves in vinegar for five minutes ...
It looks like a vinegar wash might kill a lot of it. I usually use a vinaigrette anyway.
