Schwarzenegger says he will keep vetoing gay marriage bill
Source: Associated Press

SACRAMENTO (AP) -- Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger said Monday that he won't reconsider his decision to veto a bill legalizing gay marriage and will keep vetoing the measure as long as lawmakers send it to him.

The Republican governor said he won't change his position unless voters overturn an anti-gay marriage initiative that Californians adopted in 2000.

"It would be wrong for the people to vote for something and for me to then overturn it," Schwarzenegger said. "So they can send this bill down as many times as they want, I won't do it."

The bill would redefine marriage as a civil contract between two people, but would still let religious groups refuse to sanction the unions.

... Geoff Kors, executive director of the gay rights organization Equality California, said Proposition 22 only bars California from recognizing same-sex marriages performed outside California.

1. California, please don't let your Governor tell you that whatever the people vote for, he'll veto.
Edited on Mon Sep-17-07 08:55 PM by BleedingHeartPatriot
In regard to gay marriage today. In regard to "fill in the blank" tomorrow.

I hope you have some more "voice of the people" surprises for the governator.

You all have kept him on his toes, that's for sure. :-)

3. Isn't Proposition 22 unconsitutional anyway?
Isn't it a violation of the "full faith and credit clause"? Has it been tested?

4. Not under the Defense of Marriage Act
The DOMA itself is unconstitutional, but the current Supreme Court isn't likely to strike it down.

20. What benefits are denied to same-sex couples because of Proposition 22?
Here's some background reading to help you think it through:

http://www.leginfo.ca.gov/cgi-bin/displaycode?section=fam&group=00001-01000&file=297-297.5

I call your attention specifically to Section 297.5, paragraph (a).

28. What's this? No response from anyone?
The only thing I can think of is "The privilege of introducing your partner as your spouse without lying."

In California there is no real legal difference in the eyes of the state between a married couple and a couple who are registered Domestic Partners.

Marriage is considered by many people to be a largely spiritual status, parallel to but distinct from the state-sanctioned contractual partnership. I think a lot of the reason people aren't happy with the fix we came up with here is the "forbidden fruit" thing. But a state granting marriage licenses that would not be honored in other states does cause problems.

If we are to have gay marriage in this country, it has to be the whole country all at once.

And to do that, we have to support our Secretary of State, Debra Bowen, who is reforming our elections.

19. Arnold will be term-limited out in the election of 2010
He won't be running for the office ever again, so nothing Ms. Bowen could do would have any influence on his tenure.

anyone remotely connected to the Bush mafia to actually respect the law. One might call that frame of mind "shellshock". :(

7. this is a prime example of why i HATE ''direct democracy''.
in a situation like this -- a minority group seeking equal rights is cut off by the mob.

and to rub salt in the wound -- it gives schwarzenboober a stage to act like an idiot playing to the lowest common denominator.

I should probably throw out the reminder (not aimed at you) that those who do not support GLBT marriage are not welcome on DU, per Skinner's own words.

29. Link to Official Legislative Information page, with Senate and Assembly floor votes
http://www.leginfo.ca.gov/cgi-bin/postquery?bill_number=ab_43&sess=CUR&house=B&author=leno

Looks to me by inspection there are not anywhere near enough votes to override a veto. The split is not far from 50/50.

Many Democratic members of both houses know they would be ridden out of town on a rail by their constituents if they supported this bill.
