Signs point to Johanns (R-Ne) bid for Senate

BY ROBYNN TYSVER

It looks like Republican Mike Johanns is ready to come home and run for the U.S. Senate.

Word from a supporter is that Ag Secretary Mike Johanns plans a "major announcement" next week.

Johanns, who is U.S. agriculture secretary, spent part of last week shopping for a home in Omaha, said Michael Kennedy, a Johanns supporter and GOP activist.

The former governor will have a "major announcement" next week, Kennedy said.

"I'm fairly confident Mike's announcement will be positive for the citizens of Nebraska," Kennedy said Tuesday night.

1. So, What's His Reputation?
He's worked for Bush, but not made any big newsworthy waves that I've been able to catch.

An enemy of the people, an ally for the Progressives, an old=fashioned Republican, or a neocon fascist?

2. He's seriously dull, from what I've seen of him. A safe, cautious
Bushie servant.

3. He's dull in all senses of the word
boring and stupid. How this man ever got to be mayor of Lincoln I will never know. I assume it's because no one else cared enough to run. I know he got elected to Governor largely on the strength of gay bashing. He's a waste of skin IMO and I hope no one is stupid enough to vote for him. I'd take any GOP candidate over this total stooge of big business and everything else that is wrong with the GOP. Although I have no evidence that he is a neo-con, he will doubtless go along with anything the GOP tells him.

Ag secretary quitting to run for Senate from Nebraska

By ANNA JO BRATTON and MARY CLARE JALONICK
Associated Press

OMAHA, Neb. — U.S. Agriculture Secretary Mike Johanns is expected to resign Thursday to clear the way for a Senate campaign in 2008, giving Republicans a welcome dose of good political news.

Johanns will be joined by President Bush to make an announcement about his future Thursday morning, the secretary's spokeswoman Terri Teuber said Wednesday, not commenting on what Johanns would say.

But state Republicans, who spoke on condition of anonymity because the announcement had not been made, said Johanns intends to seek the seat held by retiring Republican Sen. Chuck Hagel.

"Johanns is the 800-pound gorilla," said Congressman Lee Terry, a Nebraska Republican.

Incumbent Republicans in New Hampshire, Maine, Oregon and Minnesota face difficult challenges, and GOP retirements in Virginia and Colorado give Democrats additional targets. Democrats have also been recruiting former Sen. Bob Kerrey to return home to Nebraska to run for Hagel's seat.

Odd choice of imagery by Congressman Lee Terry. Maybe there was a subliminable message which influenced him.

5. Bush Cabinet Secretary to Jump Ship in Effort to Fill Hagel Seat

Bush cabinet secretary to jump ship in effort to fill critic's shoes RAW STORY
Published: Thursday September 20, 2007

President Bush will announce at 9:30 AM ET that his Agriculture Secretary, Mike Johanns, will resign his cabinet post and run for the Senate seat being vacated by vehement anti-war critic Chuck Hagel (R-NE).

Hagel is retiring.

According to The Hill, "The decision sets up a potential battle with former Democratic Sen. Bob Kerrey, who is mulling a run. Johanns would first face challenges in the GOP primary from several candidates, including state Attorney General Jon Bruning."

"A former Nebraska governor and Lincoln mayor, Johanns only became a Republican in the late 1980s. He became Agriculture secretary in 2005," the Hill adds.
