Rice heads to Mideast on latest peace mission

JERUSALEM (AFP) - US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice heads to the Middle East on Wednesday pledging to organise a "serious and substantive" conference to advance the cause of Israel-Palestinian peace.


She is due to meet Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert and Palestinian president Mahmud Abbas on her sixth visit to the region so far this year to revive peace talks and prepare for the US-sponsored conference this autumn.

"This meeting has to, in a substantive way, support the activities and the efforts of the parties to lay the foundations for the negotiation of a Palestinian state as soon as possible," she told journalists travelling with her to the Middle East.

"I think everybody expects it to be serious and substantive. I think everybody expects it to address critical issues and we do not expect anything less."
