Bush Says Democrats Risking Kids’ Health

WASHINGTON (AP) -- President Bush challenged Democrats on Thursday to quickly renew a popular children's health insurance program and accused them of ''putting poor children at risk so they can score political points in Washington.''

The State Children's Health Insurance Program is set to expire Sept. 30. Democrats are pushing for a $35 billion spending increase for SCHIP, and Bush has threatened to veto it. He has proposed a $5 billion increase.

The president urged lawmakers to send him a simple, temporary extension of the program if both sides cannot agree on the terms of a new measure.

''If they fail to do so, more than a million children could lose health coverage,'' Bush said at a press conference. ''Health coverage for these children should not be held hostage while political ads are being made and new polls are being taken.''

8. "putting poor children at risk"
"putting poor children at risk"

I suppose these would be the children who are exposed to the toxins that are dumped into the environment every day by the corporations who ass he spends so much time kissing, predominantly in poor areas. He is right about one thing, there ARE millions of poor children at risk, and it is in large part do to the policies of his sorry assed, lying, cheating, stealing and incompetent administration, the S.O.B..

10. Who's doing the "hostage-taking" exactly?
Last I looked, the Democrats don't have veto power and can (and should) send him a bill. If Bush feels like he's on the right side of this issue, then I say let him proudly and loudly veto it or get his Congressional loyalists to filibuster it to death. He (or his advisers, anyway), however, seems to understand how popular this is and just how bad he'll look if he vetoes it, so he's just throwing an infantile temper tantrum and trying to get the Dems to capitulate to what HE wants (as usual). He could certainly care less about all of the children whom currently stand to lose health coverage if this bill gets vetoed. If lots of children lose health coverage even though the Dems (and probably even some Republicans) send him a bill that HE vetoes, then HOW can he blame the Dems for the mess. Oh, and regarding his comments about how fiscally responsible his (mis-)administration has been:

These "tantrums" of his are getting ridiculous. I wish that the news media would stop pretending that they are "press conferences".

Dems (and reasonable GOPers): STAND YOUR GROUND AND DON'T GIVE ANOTHER INCH TO THIS MAD HATTER!!!!

14. Why don't Democrats respond with press conferences of their own?
Edited on Thu Sep-20-07 04:11 PM by butlerd
Of course we get to respond to his MAJOR speeches but he can call press conferences on a whim and command the public's attention for several news cycles. I think that Democrats in Congress (and elsewhere) need to get a coordinated effort going to call their own press conferences or otherwise respond to each and every one of his press conferences and/or his major public appearances. I think that part of the problem of the Bush/GOP getting to frame the debate all of the time is because there is often not much of a response from and hence, lack of coverage of the Democratic position. I know that POTUS gets the most attention from the public and indeed the world and POTUS will always be heard more often and louder than any member of Congress or of the public but that shouldn't prevent us from making a substantial effort to increase our visibility and get our position out there for people to hear. If ours is truly the majority opinion on most important issues, then it is our battle for the hearts and minds of the public to lose. If we get out there and make sure to remind people that we stand for them, there is far less likelihood that they will be swayed by the cheap (but amazingly effective) political demagoguery promulgated by the right-wingers not to mention all of the propaganda they are continuously "catapaulting".

20. Up is Down. Black is White. Right is Wrong with these people.
Sounds like the same bullshit he pulled with the Troop Funding bills.

Either we call him on this now or he spends the rest of his Presidency playing "Gotcha" anytime he wants to fuck over one group or another that needs help and doesn't want to pass the bills we're pushing to expand help for them.
